I'm a fan of the 1903.

Just not a fan of the standard ladder site of the earlier models. Especially the "Battle Sight" notch that is so small I'm not even sure it's really there let alone be able to see it and use it lol

I really like the 1903A3 rear sight however. Huge improvement.

Been debating picking one up but I have read and heard people say that it is very common for the rear sight to lose its elevation/zero because of its design. Is there any truth to this? Can any A3 owners attest to this being true or false?

I haven't had any problems with mine. I could see this being a problem if the sight was worn. Blue loctite or clear nail polish on the threads could be a fix for this though. If not replacement parts.

Ack, thank you.

I just need to raise some funds and find me a good condition Smith Corona :D

How hard is it to find new barrels if you get a rifle with a shot out one? Average price?

Are the A3 receivers compatible with any of the other 1903 model barrels?

Barrel pop up on Ebay but if they are in usa, seller will likely not ship to canada. Price depend of the condition. Fews weeks ago on ebay, i found a 1903 barrel nos 1919 dated but couldnt be shipped up here. price was $276 can + shipping. A3 barrel will fit right on on the 1903 with the laddersight but barrel need to be turned a little to install the sight base.

The nail polish trick should work. The 1903 Sringfield was a complete ripoff of the 98 Mauser with a few changes(for the worse) to avoid patent infringement. It didn't work and the U.S. government had to pay Mauser a penalty. The Mauser feature that they shouldn't have copied was the lousy battle sights.

Never in 40 some years have I ever heard of '03A3 sight not holding zero. They don't just go on an '03 receiver though. The major difference between an '03 and '03A3 was the two groove rifling and the sights. Plus the stampings used for non-essential parts. The receivers are the same, as I recall. Remington was making '03's and just simplified the design for easier and faster production.
Good luck finding an SC in Canada, in any condition. They only made 234,000 total. Not many Remington's, in decent, condition either. No barrels out of the U.S. without their export permit. Western Gun Parts maybe.
E-Bay gives money to the people who want to take your firearms away from you too.

There is a small flat spring with detent attached to the aperture portion of the sight. This spring has a detent that snaps into the corresponding grooves in the sight base when you adjust the elevation for the various ranges. Sometimes this spring breaks and the aperture can slide freely up and down its channel. That's about the only issue you could possibly have with the elevation. The windage adjustment has a pretty good detent so it should remain positive as well. I've had no issues with mine, although I haven't really shot it much.

I got tired of waiting to find a really good one here at a realistic price, so I bought mine in the U.S. and had it imported by Prophet River. Cost me around a Grand when all was said and done. Got it 5 weeks too.
