When the germans invaded Portugese East Africa in 1917, they were using the 1871 mauser as they had plenty of ammo for them and the more modern cartridges were being reserved for their machine guns. when they surrendered in late november 1918, Von Lettow-Vorbeck wrote, with considerable pride it seemed, that they did not hand over one modern german rifle.

IIRC, one of the terms for turning over their arms was that the British pay the German Askaris their back pay.
