That's the Portego one with the split rear bridge, right??...sort of a Mauser/Mannlicher? If its the one I think it is... sold one in 1985 for $25....which was about twice what I paid for it. I sold one in 2003 for about $200...which was about twice what I paid for it....both times I confiscated the hinged floorplate/trigger guard assembly for my own project guns....it fits right on any Mauser 98. I saw a mint one go for ridiculous money once at Bud Haynes' (Jim Baggley's) auction..well over $400....but the bidders were yanks with deep pockets.
I have one. It's a very well made rifle and it has big square sights that my tired eyes can see. I hope to shoot it soon when I get a bullet sizing die.
Vergueiro was the Portugese officer who designed the bolt. The Portugese tested the turnbolt Mannlicher but did not like that it can be fired with out the bolt head. Verguiero's design eliminated this alleged defect.
what would 0ne in the orginal 6.5x58P bring which was bought in the early 1970's and still has the bore packed full of the orgial factory storage gress as I never cleand it out figering it would make it's self a intersting peace and find to sell a few years down the road
The one in the NFA journal had post 1955 British commercial nitro proofs. Probably prooved for sale in Britain as surplus when they came on the market c1973.
There is a good write up at www.saaaca.com. It appears that all the M1904 MV transferred to the Empire went to South Africa where thet were marked with the /I\in U and UDF (Union Defence Force) mark. Most were deactivated in 1921.
Used to load the 6.5x58 which is similar to the 6.5x55 in performance.
For loading the 6.5 x 58 I used starting loads for 6.5 x55 to begin with 3031 and 156 gr bt. Had a good upply of 3031 at the time. Resized 8 x 57 cases. Shot about 2-2 1/2 " if I recall.
