Lots of red flags with this one...

Firstly, are you sure it's an 1894 and not an 1892?

If it is an 1894, it's probably been rebarreled, as the 1894 wasn't chambered in .44-40 at the time you say this gun dates to.

The other possibility is that it's a post '64 commemorative, which had it's own serial number range.
 
The metal from what I can see looks good on the receiver other than the bugged stock thru bolt hole, stock needs replaced, and then the question of the bore. I'm with Kamlooky on this -$500+/-.
 
.44-40 is not a regularly used caliber these days, unless you shoot Cowboy Action matches. The downside there is that to shoot CAS matches you need a rifle that holds 10 rds. It might be a collectors piece. If it were me, I would ask for $800, and be willing to barter.
 
My 44-40 in the middle. As near as I can tell she was born in the 1800's.

Nice looking, thank you. Mine is aged to 1894-1895. A bit abused but not bad for such an old rifle. I am happy to have her from the trade. I will quietly try and find original stock and foreend and see if I can find a local gunsmith/restorer. I plan y to o shoot it this week!

do what you have to do to bring up to your standard, its part of the game
I have an oldy also, rusty bore and a very slight bend to the barrel, had to use epoxy filler to tighten up the butt stock
and one screw has been replaced with a Canadian version, w/Robertson head lol
but it shoots

Titan Reloading has the Lee reloading gear you'll need :cool:

where did you find cowboy load 44-40?
I haven't had much luck.
 
1 st off bore condition will be major factor in value odds are from that time frame likely washed out second over all condition repairs pitts and such if it has any such issue the value drops fast
300-1600$
it's not that hard to evaluate
if you have a 2010 chevy truck 69000 km no rust looks like new 16000$
2010 310000km
rust bucket 2500 it's no different with guns
personal attachement adds no value
