Has anyone had any experience building anything out of a 1905 Ross action? I have heard about safety issues but wondering about others. Thanks,KengKyle

What safety issues have you heard about the 1905 Ross action? The barrel shank has a most remrkable thread, which would be a challenge to duplicate. This would limit rebarrelling. Whether it would be possible to use an original barrel shank to create a collar into which a new barrel could be conventionally fitted is anyone's guess. Incidentally, the 1905 barrel is easy to detach fom the receiver. The magazine system is a mousetrap which makes inletting much more complicated.
I have a 1905R sporter with a geuinely poor barrel. I have thought that a rebore to .35/.303 would be interesting.

The safety issues were all related to mis-assembly of the bolt, as I recollect. I've seen various ross rifles rechambered to 284 Win, 458 Win Mag, and a couple of 303 based wildcats, used to be an old gent here in town that had a half dozen of them. He's passed on now, and all the guns were sold off about eight years ago, but it's certainly do-able. - dan

The safety issues were related to misassembly of the 1910 bolt. I would appreciate hearing about 1905 safety issues.

Rifles on Ross actions

I knew an old gentleman that made lots of different calibres on Ross actions. He was in the process of making one by rethreading into a cut-off barrel and fitting similar to a Savage action barrel assembly. It was going to be in 7X61 Sharpe and Hart. He died before completion of project. I personally have a 22-303 on a Ross action. Great coyote gun.

The 1905 Ross barrel shank has a strange quick twist left hand thread. It was intended that after removing a set screw, the barrel could be turned off by hand. Not very many gunsmiths would be prepared to try to duplicate this thread pattern. Converting the original shank into a sleeve, and fitting a new barrel to it would be one way of rebarrelling. The catch is that the shank of the new barrel is going to have to be somewhat smaller in diameter than the minor diameter of the original's threads.

If there was sufficient interest, probably an outfit like Lothar Walther would make up a run of barrels. They would need to have the original profile in all respects.

The thread is 3TPI, but CNC machinery would have no problem with that.

Cut the chambers just a little short and ream to suit HS once fitted.

Someone would have to take the lead, but there must be thousands of shot out Ross 1905s in this country, sporters and military.
