I believe there are two versions of the MkIII nosecap. The early version is sheet-steel as Smellie describes, simialr to the MkII. the three I have had were all the later version which is 1/8" in thickness and of one piece with the bayonet lug. I had a discussion with Wheaty about this. Don't know for sure at what date through the manufacturing process this changed. I will forward this to Wheaty and see what he knows. NOTE: Ross Rifle Story Pg 111: Forged nosecap adopted by SSAC June 11, 1915; hard to say when old stock nosecaps used up. See photo of the later type. It is secured only by a fillister head cross screw from the left side which is threaded into the nosecap on the right side.

Length of nosecap is 2.078" (correction from what I posted before)
Front of nosecap is open as shown; width where forestock fits, .981"; Inside Height from bottom to top 1.250"
Height to where inside steps down to size to clear barrel about centre of barrel, hard to measure without removing nosecap,
barel at this point measures about .672"
Height at swing swivel loop 1.697"; Height over bayonet lug same;
Bayonet lug width .395"; Length of bayonet lug head .444";
width of bayonet lug below head .176", length .400"; front radiused.
