Okay its 1910 your country has chosen you to design their new military rifle for the coming conflict. No one wants to take any chances as time is short so you can only use proven technology of the time. What would you come up with.

Not a rifle.

There are very few nations that can develop a new rifle so quickly and put it into mass production.

There are a few examples of such rifles in WWII but not much in 1910.

Most combatants, already had suitable rifles in their arsenals already. They likely didn't have enough to go around though, so they issued obsolete designs to rear echelon people to make available newer designs for front line troops.

The Russians had their Mosins, the UK had their Lee Enfields and of course, most of Europe, other than France and Norway, had their Mausers. By 1910, those designs, as well as others had been pretty much perfected and were considered to be state of the art.

One of the biggest issues they had with design in those days, was the availability of decent smokeless powders and had to work around what was available.

The parameters of this question handcuff the designer somewhat, much the same as it did back in 1910. The reason we had the designs that we did in 1910 is because nobody then wanted to take any chances in designs that might be considered a "non standard technical leap". Sir Charles Ross gave it a try, and look what he got for his trouble...

Since the P14-M1917 was technologically possible, although not designed until around 1913, I'm going to go with that, but with a 24" barrel instead of the 26" they actually used. It's an extremely sturdy rifle with an action that had plenty of mechanical "camming" which would be great for the oversize British ammo that was soon to follow.

If we were to go with designing our own cartridge as well, then my answer would be somewhat different.

I would go with the following, 6.5 Japanese cal. light for caliber 120 gr spritzer ( a la 30/06 ) , scaled down lee enfield action, one piece stock with smle type forend and fittings, butt end with a decent comb. Rear sight Ross peep. Bayonet hung like smle but 6 inches shorter, 22 inch barrel.
