hey guys,

I'm not new to pistol shooting but I'm looking to purchase my first one. I've liked the 1911 platform for a while now and was looking at SAM however I've recently discovered they don't make a .40. Anyone know of a decent 1911 chambered in 40 for around the 6-700$ range?

If nothing is really available, I'm prob gonna go m&p40 unless you guys steer me in another direction.

Thanks guys

Unless you find an old Sam omega 6 (which I did), next cheapest choice would be an STI Trojan (~900-1000). Other choice is to find an 10mm and swap out the barrel.

STI Trojan retails for about $1400 these days.

84wh1, are you sure you want a .40 for your first handgun? Have you ever shot one?

This.

1911s in .40 S&W aren't common. The ones I've seen (and own) have been for IPSC Classic Division. The STI Trojan being the most common (and probably the best value).

But they are not without issues. The 1911 was designed to run a .45 ACP and there are numerous problems (magazine/feeding) that result from trying to run a cartridge with a shorter OAL. Many of these issues are resolved by loading the .40 S&W longer than spec (1.180" or 1.200" in more extreme cases). A solution that requires you to own a reloading press.

Stick with the M&P. Fewer headaches. If, in the future, you want a 1911 in something other than .45 ACP, go with 9mm. There is a greater selection and they don't seem to suffer from the same issues.

Thanks guys. I think I'm gonna look into the sig320 or m&p40. I've had the opportunity to play around with both a little and enjoyed them. I like the value of the m&p but the SIG has an IOP that I'm looking into so in the end, it might come down to lowest price.

I just started reloading so maybe when I eventually get a 1911, I'll grab me a .45 like the way it was meant to be. It shouldn't destroy the wallet when I make my own ammo

I am pretty sure that I saw Epps had a Sam Omega 6 for sale for $575. I have one and really like it. shot my best ever match with it on the weekend.
There have been some reports of people having trouble with the Omega 6 but mine runs really well.
I did have it tuned and changed the grips and sights. I also added a magwell.

If you are willing to spend more Sig Sauer has 2
1911 in 40 or go the Sti route.
Any way you go you are going to need good magazines. I have found that the Tripp research mags to be really good. I'm using 10mm mags so I can use them in my delta as well.
