1911 .45---> 10mm

Maybe a stupid question, but how hard is it to change the caliber of a 1911? I'd like to convert a .45 to 10mm. What needs to be done, and can I do it myself or I need to have a gunsmith work on the gun?

I was thinking of using a S&W scandium frame and a stainless slide and then adding all the aftermarket parts I want.

I want a scandium frame (very strong but same weight as aluminium) but S&W don't make them in 10mm.

Also I can get the S&W for a reasonnable price.

I'll probably miss a few details but among other things you have to have a slide for 10mm with matching barrel, extractor, firing pin, spring, etc. and a new ejector.
With good magazines, the feeding should not be a problem altough you should get a ramped-barrel configuration if you can because the dedicated 10mm seems to have a different angle on the feed ramp.

Does S&W recomend the use of thier Scandium with 10mm? That might be why they don't build them. Either way, with full bore 10mm loads, thats not going to be a very pleasent hangun to shoot, and we can't carry (up here) so why build it so light? :confused:

Don't know if s&w recommends that...

I'd like to have such a gun to carry in the states and here if I ever get my wilderness ATC .

Usually 10mm holds more rounds than .45...he did say he wanted something for CCW in U.S.A.

45 is great cartridge but 10mm is FAR superior in every respect.

More energy, flatter trajectory, more capacity, and very accurate. Everything you want in a cartridge.

As far as conversions lots of guys seem to be using .40S&W guns as donors.

Here is a sample of a real beauty...A Kimber .40 converted to 10mm...very NEAT carry piece.

You need to get a 10mm (or .40) slide as well as the correct extractor and ejector as well as firing pin.... That is in addition to the barrel, of course :)

Mind you, I am NOT trying to discourage you - I have such a gun myself, and it's great!

Thanks for the answers!

I'll decide in the next few days if I buy a Dan wesson commander bobtail, a colt delta elite or build a gun with aftermarket parts on a s&w frame... I'll let you know what I decide!
