1911 8rnd mag advice needed.

So, I am now looking to buy some magazines for a 1911... I like 8 (it's a good number) but have read they don't last long. How often would one be replacing springs in these? (I'd probably use Wolff springs as they are easier to get here)

I would also prefer flush fitting tubes, but would happily take extended tubes if they were as reliable and long lasting as the 7's (do these exist?).

Can anyone add anything to this post; their experiences? I would also like any good Canadian sources for magazines.

Lastly, should I just get 7rounders :D

Seriously though, I thought the Kimbers came with 7rnd mags (on their website that is what they are advertising as under for the Custom II's, etc.)

I guess I will have to wait and see ;)

Where did you buy your other mags from if you don't mind me asking? (if you have others).

Not the KIMBER TLE RLII 8+1 in .45Auto
 
My S&W1911 came with two Wilson Combat eight rounders in 2003 and I bought four more. I shot a minimum of 300 rounds every week for three years with these and have never had a problem or had to replace any springs. The Bumber pads are small and don't protrude from the grip very far. The Wilson Combats are the best eight rounders I've every used.

I've now been using the eight of the 10 round Chip McCormick for the last six months. Shooting 400 to 500 rounds every week, still no spring wear. The only problem is that these mags have large bumber pads & bottoms that interfered with my Wilson slip on mag well, so I remove to remove the mag well. Are you planning on getting into IPSC, then 10 rounders would be what you want.
 
The Wilson or McCormicks is all I use for serious shooting.even the 10 rounders work flawessly .The McCormick 10 rounder fits a bit nicer if thats important to you ?

Great... I am leaning now towards the CMC 10rnd Powerball mags (they look nice and I don't want to exceed our Canadian Magazine laws :p) I would also like to try some IPSC in the near future.

Would anyone know a Canadian source for these or should I just try contacting CMC in the US (I noticed that they might be Canada friendly - "Foreign Customers must make prior arrangements before shipment." whatever that means).

So yeah, please post links or I will just give them a call tomorrow.

way back when the 8's first came in, i converted all the mags i could from 7's to 8's - the only issue i had was that sometimes the lips were on the mag tube were too wide and would the the follower spring right through ( these were cheap 1 piece 5/25 buck probably south american) and eject the top round- now the "kits" are about the same price as an 8 rounder, so i say get a new mag- i've never had an issue with my 2 wilsons either- btw, the 8 round kit mags fit flush/ no bumper pads

You can order them from Brownells directly, but I found it's a bit cheaper just to have my local gun shop(Williams Arms) order them for me. A lot of stores do stock them at a regular item. Freedom Ventures is out your way and they might stock them.
 
I believe that I have 4 Wilson mags of the 8 round variety. possibly with spare followers and springs. I will have to take stock to find out what I have. If you are interested PM me and we can work something out
 
I stopped using CMC because the feed lips are spreading apart slowly. They still feed ok, but they don't freefall anymore unless I squeeze them so they can freefall again and resume spreading apart.
Maybe my particular 1911 have a tight mag channel.

My kimber came with an 8 rounder.

I now buy exclusively metalform. You can't beat the price if you get in a 40+ mags group buy.

try mixing your springs and followers up- and reversing the springs- i've done this with 8 of those cheapie south americans and now they all drop out like butter- just a matter of getting the right compnents in the right bodies
 
I would have agreed that Wilson Combat was the only way to go, until Chip McCormick introduced the Power mag, Les Bear has his 8 rounders and Novak has an 8 round mag that is out fo this world. All of the above are little cheaper then Wilson and every bit as good.
