Has anyone had problems with FTF, FTE, FTL's with a 1911 9mm ??

I have read a few mixed reports of some problems with the 9mm case being too short to be reliable in a 1911.....I find this hard to believe...so I am asking some good ole Canadians what their experiences are....oh and you too RichardOldfield :) I do respect your opinion so chime in if you would.

Guns in question are Kimber 1911 9mm.......also STI Trojan 9mm...and others.

If anyone has any experience with these or other 1911's in 9mm, please post.

All input is greatly appreciated.

I own a STI Trojan in 9MM and had an excellent Norinco NP 29 in 9MM. The Trojan is very tight and requires a 10# recoil spring in order to function porperly. Mine would not hold the slide back after the last round was fired until I made the change. Other than that the gun runs flawlessly. Mags have to be tuned occasionally so the foot on the follower properly engages the slide stop and this was true with the Norinco as well.

Other than that 9MM shoots extremely well in the 1911 platform and is a joy to shoot with little recoil. A great gun for ESP in IDPA.

Hope this helps.

Take Care

Bob

Any mag designed for the 1911 platform is fine with the NP-29.

I shoot a NP-29 with interchangeable 9mm/.38 Super top-ends. I use a variety of .38 Super mags for both top-ends. I have no 9mm mags at all.:)

I have a Np-29. I have problem with 147 g. The slide does not open after the last around. I use the original mags now and want to find some good quality mags to try.

The problem with 9mm in a 1911 is that the gun was designed for a 45ACP.

It creates two issues;

1. Feeding: 9mm being shorter has to feed at an increased angle than the longer 45 round.
2. Extraction / Feeding: 9mm doesn't have as much recoil to move that big chunk of steel slide that a 1911 has.

Both can be overcome by tuning springs, extractors & barrels plus proper magazines; and have been.

Of course, like everything that has a downside, there's an upside - as 9mm in a 1911 is tamed so well. It's a joy to shoot.

If someone has an issue with an STI 9mm, I'd appreciate knowing about it so we can fix them up ASAP.

Apart from limp-wristing failures, the only problems I've ever had with mine (pimped-out Colt Series 70) have been magazine-related. My Mec-Gars consistently make it fail to feed. My Colt magazines have been 100% reliable with it, as have some unmarked ones from another maker which are definitely not Mec-Gar.

.38 Super magazines will work, but one shouldn't *expect* them to. The 9mm mags have a spacer at the back edge to push the shorter, smaller-based cartridges forward/up. Super magazines don't have that spacer, so 9mm rounds may sit too low for the slide to feed them reliably. It'll vary from pistol to pistol, and probably between magazine brands, as well.

Given the choice, I say buy dedicated 9mm magazines, and buy good ones.

I've got an IMBEL (read: Springfield INC) 9mm and an NP29 9mm 1911. Both are sweet right outta the box. Never had a single issue with FTF or FTE's EVER !

I'm using a myriad of MecGar, Pachmyer (read: MecGar), MetalForm, Colt (read:MecGar) magazines right now.... They are ALL sweeeeet to use and feed oh-so reliably.

I'm using the original factory springs.

Life is good,
Barney

9mm in 1911 Platform...

Previously had a Colt Series '80 Govt in 9mm and a Star Model B in 9mm. Both functioned & shot very well. The Star had the edge in the accuracy department...

The only issues I had was with 147gr flatnose bullets. I am dreaming of an STI Ranger in 9mm. I like the feel of the commander length when shooting
9mm on a 1911 platform.

Yes, I have problem with 147 gr flatnose bullets too. I think I should shoot with 115 gr or 124 gr.

Got a Kimber Stainless Target in 9mm. I've only put 100 rounds through her so far, but not a problem. I was shooting nothing but Winchester white boxes. Going to try out some Golden Sabre this weekend if weather permits.

I was browsing and saw a right up in G&A about the 1911 in 9mm. The writer said the issue had a lot to do with mags. He said the Springfield Armory mags work very well.
