Quick question: can I put a 1911 barrel from a government sized into a commander sized 1911?
(ie is the only dimensional difference between the two barrels is the lenght of the rifled part?)

Yes and no.

The barrel is 3/4" shorter on the Commander, that is the main difference. The catch is whether or not the barrel has a smaller outside diameter behind the bushing. Some barrels are the same diameter for the entire length while others are stepped and have a smaller diameter behind the bushing to allow for less drag.

I would measure each barrel on an individual basis.

I am re-barreling a 1911 that was made in 1917,the feed ramp needs to be modified on the new barrel to make it work.
Re-barreling is usually done by highly skilled gunsmiths.

Yeah but unramped barrel are drop-in if not oversized.

Anyway, the reason I am asking is because I would like to cut a government barrel to commander lenght and put it into a commander sized slide/frame

FWIW.
I installed a Bar-Sto full length barrel in my Colt Commander.

It was no more difficult, than fitting a bushing and link.
The feed ramps of frame and barrel must be in their proper alignment with the correct positioning.
Check headspace and adjust as needed.
Check lock-up and adjust as needed.
Function check.

My pistol shot so well, that I never cut the barrel.:)

so dimensionnally they are the same but the government lenght is longer. (Is my udnerstanding)

Both the 9mm and 38 Super barrels come in two types - the lighter version where the barrel OD is smaller behind the area of the barrel bushing and the heavier version with the same barrel OD throughout the entire barrel length. Both types are completely interchangeable. The .45 barrel however comes in only one OD throughout the entire lenght. New custom barrels of any caliber will need the lower lugs to be cut to the frame, however "drop in" barrels will do exactly as name implies. Your barrel should just drop in however as several posts state - the Government barrel will have to be shortened (but only for looks.)

Sorry. Replacement barrels are not at Numrich. They are at Sarco. I bought a 1911 45 5" and am very pleased with it. Drpped right into an old colt and a new Norinco.

Thery have 45, 9mm, 38 super in all lengths. Priced around $45 to $50.
