Just curious, are there any potential problems caused by using a 5” barrel in s commander length slide/frame other than making sure there is no binding?

You might need to fit a bushing for this purpose but that is about it.
Lots of people have threaded barrels for compensators/brakes and the bushing is usually fitted for the task.

Some barrels are not of constant OD and only match the bushing's Internal Dimension at the end.

You got 1.5 cm on a Colt Series '70 before it shrinks (regular and NM). Series '80 might have been cylindrical if I remember correctly. Norinco's seem to be cylindrical, based on the one I dug up.

It is my understanding that the dimensional differences are only in the barrel length bushing length and front end length of the slide. I was thinking that the longer barrel in the shorter slide might need more vertical relief internally in the bushing. The link area and the barrel seat in the frame are identical as far as I can tell.

Barrel lug fit to slide and correct link is the bigger concern, among a few other things. Or it’ll destroy your slide and barrel. Something to be aware of.

Thanks for the reminder, I have read the books but it is easy enough to put in a barrel and if it "fits" to start blazing away without doing the proper checks.
Does anyone know for sure if Brownels is still shipping pistol specific tools to Canada?

1911's aren't like Glocks. If you're able to just drop a barrel in and go, you need to get out and buy a lotto ticket. The lug fitment, length and geometry of link are crucial to proper operation. If not fit properly, the gun could lock up, or just beat itself to hell within a few hundred rounds.

Any new barrel needs to be fitted... thats a no brainer.
I did exactly what the OP is asking about a few years ago when I changed gears on a build after fitting a Government Barrel from Dlask. This barrel's diameter matches the bushing but only for about an inch from the muzzle. It was fitted to a Government length slide , fitted to a frame/slide lock.
Then I changed gears and swapped out just the slide to a dlask commander slide. When I did so I sent it all in to dlask and they cut and crowned that barrel and provided a new bushing. Everything else stayed the same. I did not habve to make any alterations at the link or the feet of the barrel.
I have also fitted threaded government barrels to commander slides and that extra hanging out of the bushing does nothing to change any geometry inside the gun..... that stays constant.

Not quite a commander but this worked fine and the principle is the same

I sure miss Rodger Kotanko.

He always fitted my 1911 barrels. Charged peanuts for the service and the "How-To" that went with it.

I recall he fiddled and changed links to fit.

Makes me hesitant to ask anyone else to stick their neck out and fix a firearm for me. Time to grab a copy of Kuhnhausen and whatever other resources I can find and see what I can fix myself.
