I was just wondering if all standard 5" 1911 barrels are interchangeable between brands without any fitting. eg. interchangeable between Colt, S&W, Sig Sauer, Kimber, Para Ordanance etc.
Almost certainly not. I'm not knowledgeable about every brand and model of 1911, and there may be some that are so carefully made [or have such loose tolerances] that barrels drop right in, but in general I would never expect barrels or other parts to be easily interchangeable. Back in the day there was a big gunsmithing industry dedicated to assembling 1911 pistols for carry and competition and fitting barrels and action components was almost mandatory for getting a pistol that was both reliable and accurate.
I replaced the barrel on my old (1917) Colt with one from Armco and it needed the lower lip filed a bit in order to feed properly, also had to take some metal off the side of the link bracket. The new bushing needed some work to get it to fit as well,it is shooting great now and very accurate.
Para uses largely ramped barrels, so they're out (as do STI on most guns). 1911's are not the poster child for interchangeable parts, the vast majority of parts need fitting to almost any 1911 - in addition, the barrel assembly of the 1911 is much more complex than it seems at first glance, barrels should be fitted by a pro.
When it comes to 1911's, "drop in" means that the tolerances are so loose that the part can fit into almost any gun without fitting, which means that the "fit" is very loose and sloppy and not a fit at all.

Parts drop into the 1911 easily enough. Getting them to work properly is another matter entirely! Emphasis is on working properly; safety and reliability should be top of the list, trust me, saving money on this platform by cutting corners is truly a bad idea.
