I'm having an issue with my Para 16.40 Ltd not loading new rounds properly. I've completely stripped the gun right down to the frame and cleaned out every nook and cranny with brushes, etc. Every few rounds, though, it jams with the round coming out of the mag and partially up the loading ramp on the barrel. I have to hit the rear of the slide with the palm of my hand to finish the action.

I'm beginning to think that I should just replace the barrel, but I have no idea where to look for one. Any ideas on a place to buy or a fix to this issue?

I had a HUGE problem with this on my Kimber SIS when it was new.

Take out your extractor, and put a half-round bevel on the bottom edge. See if that helps - it cured 95% of my problems, the other 5% of which I'm presently tweaking and which are getting better as the gun "wears in."

You should not have to replace the barrel.

Usually, this type of feeding problem is caused by one of 2 things.
Reloads that are not the correct OAL and/or not taper crimped.
Or the mag may be defective. Try another mag.

When the slide comes forward & picks up a fresh round, that cartridge leaves the mag with the nose slight pointing up & then goes up the feed ramp & into the chamber. Check the feed ramp as it might need some smoothing out. Any burrs can cause jams.

I'm kind of picking on the barrel because of the problem getting worse as it gets used. It's almost non-existent when it's being shot after being cleaned, but put a few dozen rounds through it and it starts jamming. Usually about the point the loading ramp has a fair bit of carbon buildup. The issue seems to happen in all 6 mags that I have.

What's your suggestion for smoothing this out?
 
I have to agree with Doc. Most faliure to feed problems in 1911s are related the extractor. A little polishing and raidiusing of the extractor hook should be all it needs. Here is a little reading you might find helpful.

I wasn't ignoring you, Doc. I appreciate the suggestion and will take a look at it.
 
from what I understand lately there has been issues with Para extractors, maybe that's why there is one for sale in EE every other day... Hope its not a recall or something as I eventually want to get one.
 
Check the magazine release botton for wear, at the inner magazine retaining tab, especially if it's a "composite" release botton. It happened a few times with my 14-45. A "metal" one will cure it for ome time.

Haha... I certainly didn't think you were ignoring me by discussing another's suggestion - I hope nobody implied that you were? :)

Anyway, it takes just a few minutes with a rotary tool to polish the critical parts of the extractor.

That's the one thing I can't understand about the 1911 - everyone knows that the extractor, when new, is a disaster waiting to happen. The solution takes a couple of minutes - reshaping to a shape that most people know, or can find a picture of, BUT no one (that I've seen) ships the damned thing the right shape from the factory. Weird.

I've seen some really nice ones straight from Wilson Combat... but then again, if I pay almost 4 grand for a 1911... ;)
