Well,I have a Commander coming my way. What are people replacing the original sights with. I am partial to a Fibre Optic Front sight, but am open to other suggestions. Will replacing the front sight require a gunsmith? I have read that the front sight is staked in.....are there manufacturers of aftermarket staked in front sights?

Thanks for your help,I am new to the 1911 platform,so any help is appreciated!

Will this be replacing the GP6? :p

BTW, I just got a bladetech holster for my 5" and I really like it...works perfect if your going to run this gun in IDPA-CDP

Replace.......no! Accompany........yes. Single Stack at Sharon is coming up soon:dancingbanana: As well as some IDPA matches of course!

I have mag pouches sitting here, 2 Holsters, 10 round mags en route from Armco, and the friggen transfer is still held up at the CFO.

Thought I might as well get on top of ordering some other stuff while I impatiently wait for the CFO office to get off their collective behinds!

Good 'ol CFO....keeping people safe

Too bad its not in your hands....you could of brought it tomorrow. Assuming your coming?

The front sight is indeed "Staked" on....kinda like a square rivet in theory. Can be done yourself but at much risk to the slide (re: scratches:redface:)
Here's a small write up on the procedure if you want to learn more...

I'd have a smith do it, especially considering the $'s you can spend for some sights...I think most charge about 40 bucks to fit a front sight to the 1911, money well spent IMO.

Of course you could have the slide dovetailed upfront as well...might open up more sight options and makes for easier "changes" down the road.

I do know that there are stake in fibreoptic blades available as I've seen em but having not bought any myself I have no recommendations as to makers.

Enjoy your Commander and good luck :)

That was a great read on how that is done.....fact is I have a ton of hand tools, and would have no problem taking the staking on after I read the description.

Thanks for posting that!

Glad yer not scared...I'd attempt it too:redface:

I just would never tell someone else to attempt it.......and your welcome ;)

I used to have fiber optic front sight + adjustable Novak rear sight on my commander. Very fast and accurate. But I have just changed them back to old fashioned fixed black sights for no reason......

So far I think Straight 8 night sights is the most ideal sights on a pistol.

These are King-Tappen sights by Kings and I do not think there are better sights made.

Could I improve on them? Yes, I would like a gold dot front sight.
