Howdy folks,

I have a WW II era 1911A1 that was totally shot out etc, so I had it tweaked/improved (by Joe Dlask) with the usual custom work...Bull barrel, full length guide rod, custom trigger, polished feed ramp etc etc...

The problem I'm having is that with several of my 8rd mags (Wilson, Chip McC, Dlask) the pistol doesn't always want to feed the first couple of rounds. It's almost as if the mag spring pressure pushing the rounds against the mag feed lips is too much. I'm getting partial feeds (nose diving?). I pretty much only use 230g FMJ rounds.

That pistol has has around 700 rounds through it since the mods, and is clean and well lubed etc and is quite accurate.

Is this a magazine problem or is my recoil spring too weak or....?

I'm no 1911 expert, so I appeal to the CGN members with greater knowledge.

Thanks,
Greg

I had that same problem with one of my 1911.

I was using chip mc 10 round powermags...... we took the mag apart and laid the spring down on the table and it naturally curved around like a banana. So we "Adjusted" (bent) the spring so it naturally laid straight...... fixed my feeding problems. Hope this help you.

Hey Greg, you say it as problem feeding with several of your mags, do you have this problem with all your 8 roundres? I had similar issues with two WC EMT mags and tweaked the springs and lips of those two mags that had problems, they now feed perfectly. The two other ETM's were perfect.

Such many deficient mags is hard to beleive. I would check the mainspring. In 5" 1911's 18½ lbs. springs are usually installed by many gun builders and they are too strong IMHO, making the gun more difficult to shoot. Get and try a 15 lbs. mainspring.

I've run 16lb recoil springs in all my 1911's and they were running perfectly. 18.5lb variable recoil springs are pretty good for hot ammo, 16lb is just perfect for factory ball & lighter loads

are you using a ramped barrel? a ramped barrel has a steeper angle than the standard frame ramp that often causes nose dives and feeding problems.

or is it a three point jam? where the bullet is stuck trying to straighten itself into the barrel but gets jammed on the barrel hood, barrel roll over, and the breech face?
