My 1911 (para) is having a few problems. About every 3rd or 4th round the slide will not fully close and chamber the round, I have to push forward slightly on the back of the slide and give a lil bump to snap closed and chamber the round.

Now I am thinking a new strong recoil spring will fix the problem, or maybe even a new barrel polished up.

No I've used nothing but FMJ MFG. bullets, both from Winchester and Federal. Same exact problem with ALL MFG. FMJ and I didn't even dare try any JHPs.

How many rounds though the pistol? Have you field stripped, cleaned and looked for foriegn matter, buildup of deposits and the usual?

Not too sure of the round count, the barrel is pitted and worn but not to the point that I think it would cause any feeding problems. I stripped, cleaned and lubed everytime I shot it.
I think its an old weak recoil spring, its not like the bullet is catching anything in the chamber, it just needs a little more force to chamber it.

Also it extracts flawlessly.

Well u may very well be right on with a worn recoil spring as it sounds like it may have quite a few rounds thru it. I am assuming u have tested the chamber by field stripping the gun and dropping a live round into the chamber to see if its flush?? I also assume u have the same problem in more than 1 mag..Cant go wrong changing the spring anyways as its probably 'tired'..
Good luck
dB:)

That sounds like ammo problems or a build up of crud in the chamber. I have seen dirt or bad ammo not feed perfectly then then extract just fine. It only takes a little to make the slide stick.

But as you pointed out, perhaps just a worn recoil spring. Good idea to replace it.

I would suggest putting the rounds that hang up to one side & trying them again. If they hang up another time then it is probably the ammo.

So its failing to return to battery?

Okay, check the weight of your recoil spring if it is really easy to rack, look up the spec spring weight for the gun and buy one in spec. Also look at the slide rails and the frame rails to see if there are any scratches or marks that may indicate a burr or some such that may be dragging the slide. Also if you have a few minutes, hand polish the feed ramp a bit during the next cleaning session. DO NOT MACHINE POLISH! One last thing. Check the magazine function. sometimes the magazine may be the cause as the round "nosedives" in the magazine and kind of does wierd things in regards to chambering a round. If those things don't help out maybe look at the extractor and see if its lined up correctly and has the correct amount of temper to it.

Beyond that I would have to see the gun to get any other bright ideas...

You may have to have it ramped and throated if it isn't a spring or crud .

As you can see there are all kinds of things that can cause the problem that you have. You have indicated that you have no idea how many rounds have been fired and the bore on the barrel is pitted. Assuming that the chamber area of the barrel is not pitted lets start with the basics. Get a spring and pin kit and replace these items. Also replace the spring in the mag. It does not cost that much and gives you the proper starting point.

Thanks alot guys! I'm gonna start with the spring and see if that doesn't fix this problem, I'll post my results.
