I'm considering replacing the front sight on my 1911 to something a bit more visible and thinking perhaps a fiber optic/nigt sight option. If anyone has any suggestions of what they're using and how they like it that'd be a huge help. Thanks

Dawson or Sevigny. Make sure you get the same height as the factory sight you are replacing so your point of impact doesn't change. You may have width options. I prefer the thinnest one.

Straight 8s are great, the best I have tried. Fiber optic is great for competition but invisible in very low light. Tfo's are great too as they are fiber optic and tritium but they don't make a model for every gun so they may or may not work for you.

I have fibre optic front sights on several guns and prefer them. My favoured combination is FO up frot and plain in the rear. I would avoid anything bright in the rear and in some cases would likely black out the rear. My favoured colour for the FS is green which I find the brightest. If you have anything in the rear, make it yellow which is the dimmest. You want to avoid the RS being too bright as it may dominate and distract when you want to be focusing on the FS.

If you are using the gun for any form of action shooting where quick target acquisition is key, then use a narrower than usual sight for the front. This makes it easier to pick up the FS quickly where extreme accuracy isn't necessary in favour of speed. I find the brain learns to centre the FS anyway without too much thought.

The TFO sights for the front are excellent if you can find one to fit. It's a good combo of FO and tritium. TruGlo is one of the brands that I have had on one of my guns.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I don't do any action shooting, just put holes in paper at the range so not too worried about a narrow front sight. I just find it difficult to pick up the front sight sometimes as it's not super bright at the indoor range so just wanting something to make life a bit easier. I've read some good stuff about the tritium sights though.

Then you should give the "action games" a try!! I'd fall asleep if I were to stick with static targets. It is very hard to have more fun than shooting IPSC. I compete but not seriously with fun being the priority. Running around like a kid with other kids is a blast. All of that and playing with real guns too!!

While IPSC looks interesting not sure I could handle a dude running around me with a timer and all that jazz, I don't like birds on my shoulders. :D

Not to beat it to death but when that initial timer "beeps", the adrenalin and overall excitement takes over. I rarely even notice that the RO is there. Those 30 seconds or so are so packed for me, I'd ignore an elephant at my shoulder. The timer picks up all your shots but except for that first beep, my focus is to be safe, get my share of "hits" and to have fun. I've shot in a few matches in Canada and the US where I spend my winters. The big bonus to IPSC, IDPA and the like is the fellowship. I travel with my guns and know from experience where to find like minded people who also like to shoot.
