Just returned from range where I ran the first 100 rounds through my new Sig Traditional 1911 in 9mm. The gun ran well most of the time, mags functioned fine, felt great in my hand and loved the trigger, though much different from my P 226. During the last 45 rounds, or 5 mags, had six FTE's, new to 1911's and was more concerned about mag issues, than ejector concerns. Any thoughts on how concerned I should be, ie. Break in period fixing problem, or is it something more serious. The pistol grouped well and I was happy with the results when it did go bang. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check the tension on the extractor.

Takes 1000 rds to break in.

Yeah...6 FTEs in 5 mags is not "just needs to settle in". A couple of failures to return completely to battery in the first thousand, sure.

What mags are you using? You say they functioned fine, but the gun doesn't run, so something doesn't function fine.

Where does the brass end up when it does extract?

Is there a particular round it doesn't extract, like the first, or last in a mag?

The problem started up near the end of the shoot, so either it was too dry, too dirty, or something broke. Fully strip, clean and inspect for damage. Also check for cracked feed lips on the mags.

9mm can be finicky to run right if you aren't using propper mags/ammo.
My 9mm STI used to jam lots, until i made a change in ammo and magazines.

Metalform magazines are the way to go as far as magazines go in 9mm. They are great, in my "opinion", the best working mags out there for 9mm. Ammo profile, going FMJ over JHP helped a lot too. I can almost garantee that these 2 factors combined will most certainly garantee nice feeding.
Someone mentioned extractor, could help too. But id go there after mags and ammo, if you we're close to EOSC range id lend you mags and ammo to try.

Sounds like an extractor without enough tension. My spartan was doing that exact thing to me today. You'll find lots of you tube videos that will show you how to add tension, I've done it before, it wasn't tough at all.

Had the same issue with mine untill I went with Metalform mags.. seems fine now

Sure sounds like extractor issues.iirc there was a test for it where you take the slide off slip a live round under the extractor and then gently shake it around, if the round stays more or less in place extractor is good.

As per my original post, all six were the same style of jam. Going to range tommorow, will try will 124 grain , as previously they were 115. Will take both and see what is up. Hopefully this is a run in problem. More use less problems.

As per your original post, all you said was "FTE". That could be a wide range of problems.

If some of the time it doesn't extract AT ALL, that narrows it down a lot, obviously.

If the gun exhibits this behaviour as part of its break-in, they're building guns wrong.

If it's leaving the case in the chamber, 3 things come to mind. Too little extractor tension, a damaged claw, a rough spot (or burr) in the chamber. Bullet selection and magazines are not likely to be the problem.

The Sig 1911 use an external extractor with a double spring for tension. Check the extractor to see if there's no burrs or buildup under the hook. Check and see if you can easily work the extractor. If you can, maybe the person who installed it only used one spring instead of the two. Check the spent cases for any damages around the rim.

Let us know how your range session went and if the problem went away.

Viper for sure bullets and mags have nothing to do with this, if only the propper info was posted on post#1!
I went with what most guys had problems with at the range i go to.

The guys are giving excellent leads so far. all i can ask is, shooting factory or reloads?
My flaring tool on my dillon press had a small burr i have to sand out. It was causing a tiny burr on my brass and would jam in the chamber at the time i was shooting a cz 75, if you dont reload ignore this.
But if you do reload chamber gauge check a batch of ammo before shooting.
