It is used to capture the recoil spring and plunger, I do it with the slide off the gun, push the guide rod forward compressing the spring. Then put a pin(thumbtack stud, staple, I use a piece of welding filler rod) through the hole once it is pushed past the end of the plunger. Now you can pull the guide rod/recoil spring/plunger out.
