is there any good reason not to put one of these on a 1911?

i picked one up to test out on a Norinco before getting one for my Ruger SR1911 and my Kimber.

so far im really liking them.
which makes me wonder why high end guns dont come with them and why a lot of people dont have them.

so im guessing there must be a reason other then price that im not seeing?

I was thinking of one of the wilson combat ones that hangs off of your grip screws. I also wanted one of the Pearce finger groove inserts though, and I'm not sure how much stuff you can cram under the grips. Might have to switch to slim grips with long screws.

S&A make the only magwell that I would use. For competing they help, just for a plinker doesn't do anything really, other then the S&A which makes the grip a little longer. Makes flush 7 and 8 round mags harder to insert if that matters.

Many higher end guns (especially the practical, belt holster kind) do come with them. They make the gun bigger, require the use of extended magazine base plates, and make mag changes noticeably faster. Depends what your purpose is.

I have an S&A slim 1 piece magwell on my Springfield.
Next time I will try the Ed Brown or Les Baer 2 piece magwell.
The reason being that Eb and LB use hand cut checkering on theirs as opposed to the machine cut checkering on the S&A.

I have the Ed Brown two piece mag well and really like it. Plus you can remove the funnel part if you want to return the gun to a stock look. It also comes in checkered, snakeskin and chainlink. The last two look really nice.

The higher end the gun, the more likely they are to have a funnel (mag well) - take a look at the Springfield Pro Model. The very high end guns actually have the grip frame cut then the funnel welded in to keep the grip length the same.

my ruger and my kimber both have a mini kinda well already cut into them, but my norc didnt.

ive seen these and always thought they would be handy.

now that ive been running it for a couple days and swapping out mags to test it out im thinking i might pull the trigger (haha) and get them for my ruger and kimber.

i also notice that the 2 guns above have grips that go all the way down.

i just noticed that the grips on my ruger and kimber both are down down at the bottom.
and the grips on my norc (hogue) are also cut in at the bottom.
makes for a gap there..... not liking that.
(look at the top pic compared to the 2 posted later)

"...why..." Because it increases their costs. Chamfering the mag well works just as well. If you don't want the added weight.

Some mags do not fit easily or smoothly into some aftermarket extended magazine wells; that is many magazines with rubber baseplates. You may have to grind down some of the baseplate where it extends up the sides of the magazine to get it to go all the way into the gun. They will fit fine into the standard well but bind up on the extension where the extension meets the opening of the magazine well in the grip. You asked if there was any problem with them, and that's one that I have and have seen repeatedly.
