I have an opportunity to pick one of these up at a fair price, it's quite a few years old and is a Canadian made .40 model. Any opinions from someone that has one, has owned one or has knowledge of one?

Because all of them have problems one way or another. You need to replace all the internal's for them to work properlly. I owned one and i wouldn't buy a para ever again.

assembled in Canada, made in Florida. You're going to have to swap out most of the internals but if you are getting a really sweet deal it would be worth it.

I don't know why everyone has such a hate one for Para now. I bought my P14/45 Limited years ago used. I use it in IPSC matches. There are lots of guys that use Paras in .40cal along side me at these matches. I've never herd of anybody I know that has had a problem with theirs or having to replace parts to make them work.

This forum is the only place I have read about people having problems. My friend is just getting into pistols and bought a Para G.I. Expert (entry level) and he's shot 3000 rounds through it and hasn't had any problems.

Anyway, I love mine.

My buddy had one. After the 3rd time it had to be sent back for repairs he politely asked for his money back. Got an Sti instead. Much better gun

I've put several thousands of rounds (something like 6 or 7K) through my Para 16-40 Limited over my last 10 years of IPSC shooting. I've worn out and replaced the barrel bushing and the extractor. I replaced the front sight and added a mag well because I wanted to. Everything else on the gun are factory parts. The gun is very very reliable.

YMMV but I'm very pleased with it. It was probably manufactured in 1999 or 2000.

I had one , the front sight fell off , the rear sight fell off , the extractor broke , the ejector broke , and the slide cracked . Everything was covered under warranty , used it for IPSC for 4-5 years the boght a STi Edge .

I have come to believe that Para's quality took a major nose dive at some point... It would be nice to know exactly when... My father has had a 16-40 stainless for many years, I am guessing around 12 years... It has been ultra reliable with no parts breakages of any sort.... It is a sad state of affairs that a once reputable Canadian company is now turning out questionable products...

I've owned four paras and still shoot with a 1640 with pwr extractor for ipsc. I started shooting ipsc with a different stock 1640 and I never had a stoppage on that gun. I've heard a lot of bad things about para, but in my experience they've been nothing but reliable.

Good to hear, I guess I am going to test it,strip it and have a look see. Thanks guys! If the price is right, I may just snag it.....

I have this: http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1165/img0296ip.jpg

PRX745CBR. A lot of people had problems with theirs, but I have zero problems with mine. Zero. That one was made in 2010 at the new plant in North Carolina. The quality took a nose dive when they moved to the USA... But mine's okay. The finish isn't durable, but even during the break-in period of 500 rounds (as per the manual and the company because of the tight-as-hell tolerances), I had 0 malfunctions and nothing broke or fell off.

Mine was a very poor product.

I lost a bunch of money and it quickly became an epic fail on all fronts.

It's up to you in the end. Good luck either way.

You are one of the lucky ones. I think if you look around at forums like the 1911 forum, Brian Enos forum or others you will see a lot more problems.

On mine, the front sight fell off, the back sight broke and the slide stop cut started peening badly. This was on a 10 year old gun made in Canada. Two buddies were both running two different Para's each (primary gun plus backup) and both the primary and the backup guns puked for each shooter in major matches, so both did not finish.

Most of the IPSC shooters around here will take a 16.40 and replace most of the parts on it and shoot it till they can afford an STI/SVI. I have not seen too many new Para's as they either buy a Tanfaglio, a CZ Tactical Sport, a STI/SVI or just go right to Production.
