1911 parts - opinions wanted.

Hi guys - I am hoping for some responses to a couple 1911 questions.

1) Flat or Arched mainspring housing? What's the difference? I would think the arched mainspring housing would push the web of your hand further up on the grip safety allowing more control? What's the benefits or negatives of both?

2) Standard or full length guide rod? Opinions? Which is generally considered better for reliability? Which is better accuracy wise?

Well i went from a standard guide rod to a full length one, nothing fancy just a cheap one, and my shoting inproved. you can get them with mercury in them, or two pice ones and collapuse ones, think your talking about the grip saftey, i have heard they help a lot

1- I guess you should handle (shoot if possible) both and make your own choice, personally I prefer arched. Some people will prefer to change the trigger to a short one with an a arched MSH, it all depends on your hand and fingers. The arched MSH was designed to help the soldiers (shoot better) who were used to shoot mostly revolvers (round grip).

2- I prefer standard but opinions vary alot. For a target gun both are OK but for a working, defensive gun I would not put anything but a standard one.

1. A Very Personal thing - it really depends on your hand. I like Arched for competition guns with grip safeties disconnected and flat for carry guns with safeties active. Based on sales, most popular these days are flat, though.

2. Neither is going to affect accuracy and the shorts have proven to be just as reliable as the longs. Theoretically, your recoil spring should last longer on a long since it gives it a proper "path" but I have yet to see that proven. Long gives you other options; like working with bull barrels or tungsten versions of longs add weight, etc.

Thanks for the response guys - with regards the the MSH I guess I'll have to try both to see which I prefer. At present I don't have any problems with the arched.

The full length guide rod seems to be personal preference. My pistol currently had a full length. I can field strip it without tools (important for me), so I guess I'll keep it.
