I have a 1914 dated M1911 US Army pistol that when the safety is switched off the hammer releases. What would cause this and what parts do I need to replace ? Thank you.

I would look at the sear first. The safety interacts directly with it so if it’s worn it may be enough to cause it to release. I had one several years ago that started doubling when fired because of a worn sear. It’s not just a drop in and will need to be fitted.

Sounds like your sear is not engaging the hammer hooks so I would disassemble and inspect the sear and hammer hooks
Take some pics of the parts if you can get some good detail
either debris has gotten in there somehow , preventing sear engangement, or something is damaged/worn

^^^Yep. OP, this is a dangerous situation (hammer follow). Don't load the gun until it's rectified. Invariably, you'll find worn components related to the safety/sear engagements.

Good news is the parts are readily available though they may require a little file fitting.

Thank you for the replies everyone. I would like to get period correct parts for my 1911,as the hammer is larger than the 1911A1's. Is there a source for correct parts here in Canada ? Note that i discovered this issue without live rounds. Do not plan on using this anytime soon lol. Thank you

Pistol has been cleaned and inspected, no visible issues. Thank you

Personally take it to a smith. If hammer drops after the safety is taken off the hammer isnt engaging the sear proper. It could drop the hammer when you let the slide release.

Also could be the sear spring isnt holding the sear proper. You could play swap a rooh with parts, but nothing in a 1911 is truly drop in.

Hammer/sear can be repaired, leaving you with your original. Just need to find a competent pistolsmith. - dan

I'd start with a complete 'detail' strip of the 1911 pistol. Give every part a thorough cleaning. Inspect the hammer hooks & contact edge of the sear to make sure not worn or anything chipped off, etc.

If ok then, reassemble, including making sure the 3 leaf spring has the correct bends in it. Function test [empty] and ensure the hammer isn't falling when safety disengaged +/or hammer falling when slide released. If working properly, then I'd range test it with only 2 rounds in the mag. Load one & test fire for extract; eject; re-feed.

If hammer still falls after re-assembly then probably a new hammer & or sear is in order. As stated, on a 1911 this is not usually a 'drop in' fix.

Good luck.
