1911 scratch builds

The frame is the part that is deemed to be the firearm & as such is registered.
It may be registered as a frame only or sometimes as a 1911.
Either way, you can start with a registered frame and build it into a complete 1911.
There are some dealers who sell all the parts required for the build. Not a a build
kit but just buy want you need.

I have done a couple. It is interesting & a good way to get want you want in a 1911.
It usually turns out to be more expensive than buying a complete pistol though.

There are a few places selling 1911 frames. Depends on your budget. It's no big deal to build a 1911. Buy the frame, it is registered, then slap it together. It was easy, just like the AR, buy the lower, the registered part, everything else is easy. Message me if you need help on where to get a frame.

What individual has the means to build a frame from scratch. Is that what you meant, OP, to forge your own frame? Ya, good luck with that. I would think the Guv would frown on that just like 3D printing a frame.

Yes it's legal, till you build it into a gun. If it were that easy to build an unregistered gun, all the cool kids would be doing it. But, like an AR 80% lower, they aren't legally a firearm until you drill out the fire control group section, basically a $200 paper weight.

There is nothing wrong with building your own firearm. You just need to register it before it is complete. Whether or not it's worth doing is up to you.

If you want to do a build from parts, check out Fusion firearms. Of course you need to do the paperwork for the frame

It's still legal as long as you are legally allowed to posses such firearm(must have a RPAL for the 1911),call and register the frame(you even get to create your own serial number) at the appropriate time. You can machine it from a solid billet,no forging required.
If you plan to build and sell your now into a different set of rules.
The 80% is a BATF definition and carries no weight in Canada.
You might be shocked at the number of people in Canada building firearms in their home workshops from scratch...everything from blackpowder to ARs. Some of these fine folks even have CNC capabilities. So ya the cool kids are doing it :)

I've got 2 question that have probably been asked before, so sorry about that. This thread seemed like the best place to post my questions.

1) Are commander length 1911s restricted in Canada? Or are they prohib?

2) Is there a specific name for a 1911 with a gov frame and a commander slide/barrel?
