I'm thinking of getting a new 1911 (stainless is greatly preferred) but don't want to spend over $700 (before taxes). I don't want to customize it, so Norincos are out (plus I want something nicer)...

Was kinda waiting for a Taurus PT1911 (and still am :)), but want to consider other options as well. How much is Springfield Mil-Spec 1911? what else is there?

A Springfield 1911 stainless mil-spec is $895 CDN at the site I'm looking at. $825 for Parkerized, so it's probably worth the extra $70 to get stainless.

Stay away from taurus, that's all I can say on those!

Other than that, Norinco 1911's are actually of a higher steel quality than springfields (Norc's are forged, springfields cast) and spend a couple hundred on accessories/replacement small parts and you have a high quality 1911 that won't let you down. Gunnar is a fantastic recommendation, give him a shout.

Aside from that, I've picked up the odd series 70 or 80 Colt 1911 here on the board for $700 in very good shape, that is a fantastic option. If you buy a Taurus, you'll find it's damn near impossible to sell should you ever decide to!

So all in all, there's no contest in quality for your money or value to a smoothed Norinco (I own Kimbers, Colt's but still have a Norinco too, I'd like to think I know :p)

Norincos maybe inexpensive but they are hardly cheap. New sights and a trigger job and you will have a gun that is ultra reliable and will shoot with any 1911 you want to name out to 25 yards - can't speak to yardage beyond that because I can't shoot worth a hoot beyond 25 yards anyway.

Norincos are much better buys than the Springfield MIl-spec or Colt repro guns there is no question on that. Check out the US boards, guys down there love them and they are buying guns used.

Stay Safe

Not to be a PITA. But is there a specific reason why you want new? I would buy used from many members on this site. I think many members here treat their guns better then their kids

but if I'l ever decide to sell a tricked out Norinco I'll probably only get half of what I paid for it...

I have nothing against Norincos and I'm sure they're great value, I just want one in stainless...and not a big fan of customizing...

About Taurus 1911; it's not even out yet and people already trash it...LOL (ps: I have Taurus revolver and love it, that's why I wouldn't hesitate to buy their another gun. Plus on the US forums no one even said anything bad about their PT92/99/100/101 models...)

too bad mill spec is almost $900 :(, what about the GI stainless?

I can understand where you're coming from if you're after a stainless, my first handgun was a 1911 and it HAD to be stainless, still glad it is :p I bought a Kimber stainless II and I've never looked back, still the best 1911 there is. But, the price reflects that unfortunately. However, I've bought a Kimber custom II with night sights here for about $900 IIRC, so basically not a ton more than you'd spend with taxes on a $700 retail gun, same as a new stainless Spring would run you after all is said and done, within $50 anyhow likely. But again, not stainless, and stainless 1911's just look so damn good... Slap on a pair of rosewood grips, and now we're talkin'....

Not sure. Maybe used is a better bet.

I wouldn't bother with the G.I. Other than it's stainless it really has nothing over the norinco. I seriously considered the parkerized G.I. until I got to get a real god look at them. The norc commender was a little rougher but I shoots as good or better. I don't regret passing the springfield up.
