I'm looking for examples of what can be done to these safeties to make them look a little less ugly.

Is there a replacement safety available for these actions? Has anyone ever seen one that looked like a model 70 style safety?

Never seen much done with these safeties because they work so well as orig designed. Yep, they are a little ungainly but so is it the rest of the action.

You may want to contact Gentry firearms in the US as they make a variety of Win style safeties. Maybe they make something for the Enfields.

This is what I did with my 1917Enfield safety lever:

I just filed the right side down and re-blued the safety. It still works the same as before, but looks a lot more streamlined. It's easy to do and doesn't alter the function. I hope this gave you some idea.

There is a guy stateside who makes 70 style safeties for this action, and if you Google Tom Burgess you will see probably the most beautiful 14/17's on the planet (some of which he has altered the safeties on), the guy is an artist, and a real gentleman to deal with and talk to. If you decide you want some work done by him, there is a bidding arrangement to get a place on the list for any future work he does, and he is getting on, so prepare to spend a LOT of money. Still great work though. - dan

You can remove the factory safety and TIG weld & dress the receiver to match the contour of the other side. Then you could get a Timney Amercan Enfield trigger and a Timney Mauser 98 trigger with safety, remove the safety from the Mauser trigger and install it on the Enfield trigger.

Not for the feint of heart though... think Gunsmithing.

Thanks for the ideas so far.

Claven - That's a bit of work - but possible. I'd still end up with a safety on the side and I'd prefer a win 70 style safety. Plus the timney's safety only locks the trigger.

Dan - I couldn't find any contact info for Tom Burgess. I've certainly heard his name before though. Does he have a website or email? Even a contact phone # would do.

Rifledude - that is a much nicer looking lever - but I have my heart set on something else.

I don't think that Wisner makes a Enfield wing style safety (not listed on their webpage anyways) - but I found someone who does: Ed LaPour Gunsmithing in WA does. I've sent an email enquiring about the cost so hopefully I'll hear back from him.

I think the stock safety is pretty good but have seen ads for Win 70 type safeties. Reloader magazine number 154 (1991) has an ad from P.M. Enterprises in Chehalis Washington with a nice looking Win 70 type safety. The phone number is 206 748 3743. Ad says phone Mon-Fri 9 to 5. Hopefully they are still in business. Good luck!
