1917 SS Luger....hehehhe

More interesting that he is actually trying to sell a gun on ebay. Other than that, there are way more ss marked guns than there were ss, so sure why not? You can put in the same category as the ss pens(plastic ball point with bic on the cap), ss door matts(marked with deaths head, siege heil on top & welcome on the bottom), ss tp (recycled paper to boot), ss boots(timberland, deaths head marked & sighned by Himmler himself) & recently unearthed in the former east Germany, a complete set of ss kitchen knives( comemerative marked deaths head, Thanks from A.H. on one side & ginsu on the other).

Totenkopf

That pistol could be a WW1 calvery issue. The "Totenkopf" or Death's Head badge was first issued to Prussian calvary units around 1808, during the time of Frederick the Great. Was adopted by the SS( not just the Totenkopf Division) in the thirties. It would be awesome to examine the pistol for unit markings, there is a possibility its not a fake.

I was surprised that Ebay haven't torpedoed that auction yet. If the almost complete looking gun wasn't enough, you would think the death's head would have done it. Maybe it is just Swaszi's and SS runes that they 86....

Haha, except for the fact that it wasn't unknown for german soldiers on leave to take their luger upper with them to serve as a handy-dandy boot gun in times of trouble.

Nice FAKE!!! I guess you get more parting out a rare gun on ebay!!! LOL
It's worth much less now with the fake engraving/stamping.

the deaths head insignia was also originally a british item that was "borrowed" by the germans (and others) much like the swastika which goes way way back....forever tarnished by hitler and his goons....

Just visit some of the "specialty" forums that KNOW Lugers and you will read that there was never any sort of 'deaths head' stamping on any Luger (or any OTHER Nazi-era firearm).

At least he admits in his post that it appears to be recent (aka: FAKE!)

SS Death's Heads are different from the " or Glory " Death's Heads of the cavalry or the later Panzer troops. I think it is the placement or shape of the crossed bones someone once told me. In any case interesting! Joe

Yers, I don't belive that I have seen a Hussars 'Death Head' and must see if I can find one some time.

The Death head Insignia ( Totenkopf) was originally used in Germany by the World War one tank groups.

After the armistice of WW#1 and during the susequent Weimar republic government of Germany communist uprisings sanctioned by Lenin in many parts of Europe created many hostilities.
The Freikorps ( WW#1 soldiers group in early twenties) emblazened this emblem on some of thier vehicles and helmets. These veterens of the first world war helped to contain communist risings in the Weimar period.Basically they were thugs for hire.
These early Freikorps groups fought of many communist groups wishing to make a foothold in the turbulant times after the first world war and were used not only in Germany.
The picture of the death head on there old vehicles and helmets was used as a symbol of thier prowess.

Many luger collectors myself included believe that the Totenkopf was not an official marking of any of the German branches during the Imperial era of Germany. There has also been many of these totenkopf insignia's found on the bottom of the receivers of reworked K98's attributed to reworks from the concentration camps of WW#2.--highly regarded as fake markings coming out of the eastern block of Europe.

You will also find "SS" runes accompanying the Totenkopf insignia on some WW#2 vintage lugers.

Most serious luger collectors regard any Totenkopf insignia or SS runes on all lugers to be spurious markings at best.

As to the SS death head insignia bieng used by the infamous Schutz Staffel this is another matter.
