I recently picked up a Savage Model 1899, take down, made circa 1925. The butt is repairable, and I'm hoping to be able to repair the fore end enough to make it useable, but it's soft from years of neglect and oil soaked.

So, now I'm looking for a decent shape fore end to fit.

The US sites I've been on will no longer ship to Canada.

A take off fore end, incomplete or complete would be fine, even just the wood is OK.

Does anyone know a Canadian source for this part??? or have one on hand they would part with?

There is a nice one on Ebay, but the seller won't ship outside of the US.

I have checked all of the usual places in Canada, no luck. Most of the Savage 1899 collectors have gone to the happy hunting grounds, or don't have parts for sale.

I would prefer not to use a new made piece or fit a standard fore end.

Thanx for any replies

I was looking at Numrich as I was thinking of getting a butt to replace one a previous owner had put a recoil pad on. New made it’s about the only option unless you luck into something. I am probably going to just make the piece I need. Wood 1911 and back doesn’t fit anything else. My options are limited.
A take down forearm aren’t very common. Last one I seen forsale on GP lasted under 20 minutes.

If you live in the Okanogan, get a mail-box address in Oroville, Washington. Buy the one on E-bay and have it shipped to your new American address.

When it arrives, drive down to Oroville and pick it up.

It saves a lot of the political bull-pucky that is currently in place......:)

That stock would cost me close to $400C by the time I did that. I only paid $300 for the rifle.

I do have a mailbox in Oroville.

Thanx for the suggestion, much appreciated.

I've already started cutting bits to replace the missing bits and glued the butt stock side panel. I guess I'm just going to have to do the wood myself.

I'm great with metal, but I'm a wood butcher. Hopefully it turns out to be acceptable.

If it is soft you can use miniwax wood hardener to firm it up and then I would get it copied at a stock copier, Billy Landal 780-608-4364 does a good job , you have to do some finishing and fitting after its done , never a perfect fit right off.

Not enough there to duplicate, but I will contact him and see if he has a "blank" or another fore end to use as one.

I'm not good with wood, so it needs to be 99% finished.

There is stuff called "Cactus juice" used by knife makers to stabilize wood. The wood is put in the solution and a partial vacuum applied to pull the stuff in and then is heated in a baggie in boiling water to set it. Not the simplest method but if no for end can be found then this may be a solution.

I've used something similar on the fore end and have started gluing on pieces where they are missing. The end result will be OK.

The fore end is serialized to the rifle, and when the project is finished, the butt stock, which also had some cracks but easily repairable will match quite well, but close inspection will tell the truth.

It's going to take a few months by the time it's finished, but I'm looking forward to it. Just found a 20 inch 9mm bbl blank, which will be perfect for a switch barrel, chambered for the 357 maximum. Ran several "blanks" through the 1899 receiver and the bolt pick them up easily, the spindle handles them well and they fit well under the extractor.

This will be a fun gun, with a lot of possibilities for a person needing a light handy rifle, chambered for two very effective cartridges.

I got extremely lucky today at the Kamloops gun show.

I found three fore ends that fit the 99td.

I bought two of them.

One is carbine length and one is for long barrels.

I want to make up a barrel chambered for the 225 Win, and it will be 22 inches.

The third barrel had all of the metal, but I passed on it. Condition wasn't great.

$100 for both and hours of time saved.
