1940 mauser

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if this Mauser is a refurb. or a war capture?

The serial number has been crossed out and a new one has been stamped with the letters HAER. There are also 2 or 3 D's stamped on the stock.

We cannot see clearly but the top of the receiver says 660 and 1940 under it!

Any comments and approx. value would be appreciated!

Looks like a post war rebarreled to 30-06 done by Norway (Haer stamp). Worth about 600-700 bucks.

A very nice 1904 Kar98k in a laminate stock that has been re-worked by the Norwegians (most likely right after WW2) into 7.62 Nato. Given the relative liking of the caliber and how abundant supplies for it seem to be, you may expect some nice offers to fly by your way, should you wish to sell it. If not, she is a really nice piece of history, a Kar98k that very well could have seen the opening shots during the invasion of Norway in April, 1940.

I'm sure you wouldn't be the first - especially with these rifles marked the way they are. It's all good. I just don't want this to happen:

To add to the confusion some were later converted to 7.62 Nato by Norway, although I don't know if any of those made it to the civilian market. Never seen one myself.
