I have a 1942 full wood Enfield that I'm looking at for a friend of the family.
It has marks that I have not been able to find any info about.
I was able to see a tiny mark on the barrel under the wood that looks like "G.R" with a "p" underneath. The mark is so small I cannot take a picture. I only found it with a magnifying glass.
The milling marks on the reciever are really rough. Is this because of war time production or is this a clone, if there is such a thing ??
Any info from the experts would be great.

Looks like that's a scrubbed ex-Indian service gun. The Indians scrubbed off the British markings and applied their own when they rebuilt them. Does it have the wood screw through the forend?

Internal parts look better made.

I think it's a dispersal Number 4.

AL will be a part of the serial number. It looks to have been re-serialled.

What looks to be really rough sanding looks more to me like shaper marks.

They really did build some this rough; I have seen a few, own a couple.

Newmer, does the bolt have the same number (AL2375)?

And, on the left side of the receiver, even very faint, can you see any markings? (it would be just outside the left edge of your picture, there could be something there but sometimes it's barely visible; electropencilled).

Looks to have two serial numbers. N2524 and AL2375.
What is the mark just below the safety? Might be the factory code.
The machining marks are typical for some '42 production.
Sometimes the electropencilled No. 4 Mk. I mark on the left receiver wall is very faint.

The No. 4 Mk. I mark is faintly electro pen. on the reciever. It looks to be done by hand.
The bolt number does not match anything else. In the picture, above the
"1942" but just under the safety, is a stamped symbol. It is very hard to make out what it is. I've looked at it under a mag. glass. It kind of looks oval with a horizontal line through it.
On the opposite side the are many stamps over top of each other, cannot make out anything.
The wood is in good shape, with a stamped arrow. The sling is in great shape and is Canadian issue. Cannot make out the date.

Thanks for the responses !!

AL serial numbers

I have a 1942 Long Branch No.4 Mk.1* with the AL serial number on it. It is in the 17### range. It has not been scrubbed or refinished, but has been sporterized with an "ENGLAND" marked on the flat of the barrel. It still retains the Long Branch serial number and the bolt matches.

The AL 17### has been hand stamped in the same area as this rifle. It has been suggested that this might have been some supplied to Jordan for the Arab Legion, but that is not confirmed. Makes a good story though.
