Picked up this sporter on the EE, old and worn but an early Savage No 4 Mk 1 (no star..) 1C###x serial number, oddly according to Stratton's book, the US Property script doesn't start until the 4C ###x serial numbers...hmmm.... Finish is nil, will need re-bluing or something to cover the polished steel and surface rust.. Should be a fun winter project. I plan to re-militarize it with full wood.

I got hold of a Savage barreled receiver. It was in great shape except that it had been painted silver. I removed the paint and sprayed it with a high temp low gloss black paint. It now looks like it came out of the factory. I managed to scrape enough parts together to build it back to its old standard.

I had expected Stratton was wrong, there seem to be several misinformations in the book. I have Ian Skennerton's book on the Christmas List but not likely to have that wish fulfilled.. maybe somebody will give me cash to put toward the book!. I have an early forearm with the cut-down right side (for the mag cut-off that was never adopted) , the sporter has the cut down side so would be "proper" to use that one for the rebuild.
