Hey Everyone...I've just recently go into milsurps by buying a Mosin Nagant M44....I love shooting it!!!! Now I want to get more milsurps......In my local classifieds I found someone selling a 1944 Long Branch #4 MK1 with the original stock .....He is asking $150 and it comes with some ammo....I want to go check it out but dont know what to look for before buying one of these rifles.....Are there any features I should look for?? Ways to tell if its the original stock?? Certain markings?? Where are the numbers on this rifle so I can check if its all matching parts? Is the price he's asking about right for this rifle?? Any info would be greatly appreciated....Thanks...Wes

if it has the full stock it is a steal no matter what even if it is mismatched. To tell if it is the original stock it would go all the way down the barrel just before the front sight.

Nice find, Wes!:D

One thing I like to check is the rifling in the bore and the number of the bolthead (they go from 0-3...0 being the best.) You want to see if the gun has been FTR'd at any time in it's history (Long Branch apparently didn't stamp FTR on their rifles like Fazakerley, but they started parkerizing them in the '50's for new production and FTR's.)

I'd like to know which classified ads in Kelowna you found it in. I've got to start paying more attention.

If you aren't interested, please let me know and I'll go have a boo at it. I like Long Branch No.4 Mk.1's.

Cheers!:)

Better grab it quick...won't be there long. It's a steal.

$150 for a full wood even mismatched is a no brainer, buy it then post pictures here

we'll let you know what you have :)

Woodchopper, I've come to the conclusion that in most cases it's not worth desporterizing Enfields. There are exceptions, such as when you have a nice correct wood and band set already to hand...trying to find actual Long Branch bands and wood (of the right year especially) is very hard and too expensive. If you watch carefully good matching unmolested full wood rifles are out there and are a much better score than even a perfect sporter.
Not that I have to tell you this, I'm sure you know.

Hey everyone.....I now have pics of the Lee Enfield that I found selling for $150....It appears to NOT have the original stock since it doesnt go all the way up the bbl to the front sight.....Did they make this rifle with the stock that is on it?? Also....The magazine is missing...How hard is it to replace it??..I'm very new to milsurps so I would appreciate any input on this rifle...Should I buy it for $150????? The seller says it hasnt been shot in many years......Please give me opinions on this rifle ???.....Thanks....Wes

Well, mags can be had for $40 and the stock set for around $100 I believe from Numrich or the EE so as long as it has a great bore, looks solid to me.

Still has the front sight protectors/ears also, those are often bubba'ed off so that's another plus.

As a sporter $150 is about the max it could be worth. You haven't bought it yet? Check carefully whether the bolt and receiver serial numbers match and how good is the bore? Is it shiny and bright? You may need to put a cleaing rod down it with an oily patch to see how the bore is.
The rear sight is #####ed...no mag... no military wood or bands...not a whole lot there unless it has matching numbers and a great shiny bore.

Offer him $100 if all else is good...it's not worth a whole lot more.

Sporter and bubba are not mulsurps. Pay a little bit more and get the real thing.

If you go here it will give you an idea of the cost for parts to refurbish. If you look around, check and post on the EE, and maybe go to some gunshows you'll most likely be able to save some money.

I would suggest looking for what the other guys on the thread have said, then since it seems fairly bubba'd, offer him about $50-$75 for it. With a little effort you can find better condition bubbas for cheaper than what he's asking, but if his head isn't in the clouds he probably knows this and is expecting you to bargain him down.
