Hi guys,i'm wondering if you could shed some light on this.I bought an all matching 1944 M44 Izhevsk in nice shape at a gunshow about a year ago.The guy selling it was not even aware that it have German capture marking everywere on it until i paid him an he handed it to me,then he saw the markings and said "Hummm German capture marks".

So i saw the markings from the beginnings and it wasn't the reason i bought it but thought that it was nice to have them for the cool factor.
So almost a year past and while talking about it to a fellow Gunnutz that knows more than me about Mosins and milsurps in general he told me that those markings are likely to be fake on a 1944 M44.He said at the time they didnt have the time to stamp it but seeing the stamp closely we clearly see that they stamped it in 1963 and not during wartime...unless the 63 mean something else than the year... Also at the time i didnt have pictures or the M44 with me to show him.

I have taken not so bad pictures of it now and though i could share them with you guys and at least have other opinion about it.

It have markings on the left side of the barrel behind the rear sight,on the bolt,on the left side of the trigger group and also on the stock in front and rear of the trigger group.

Definitely not stamped in 1963. Think about it. The 63 would mean something else, if it is an authentic marking and not fake. I'm no expert in WW2 German markings so I'm not going to call real or fake.

Looking at the bolt face where the serial number is, it appears to be that the serial number begins with numerals, not a Cyrillic prefix. IMHO the bolt was post war refurbished, with its original serial number obliterated and restamped with just four numerals...or it was replaced with pre-1938 bolt without Cyrillic prefix...IMHO it seems like the eagles were stamped over the serial number meaning that the stamp is either fake, or the carbine was refurbished during the war and than captured (I doubt though)
At some point I have seen a fake SA, waffenampts and other stamps on eBay, all originated in Poland.

I hate to say so, but it's been humped. WaA63 was used at Mauser Oberndorf from 1935-1940 and at dot (BRNO) in Czechoslovakia from about 1943 to 1945.

It as NEVER used on captured arms, with hte possible exceptions of a few VZ24's converted to K98k pattern.

Captured arms were only stamped if they went to a depot for some type of repair prior to re-issue, and they were not stamped wth Waffemampts on the metal - they were only stamped on the stock wrist just behind the trigger guard. That stamp would be the HzA eagle proof, which is pretty unique.

A number of these M44's were sold by M@rstar a few years ago and they are widely believed to be faked recently, though M@star claimed they did not do it. They claim a lot of things though.

WaA63 and SS stamps are readily available and even numrich sells repros.
