1951-1956 Longbranch rifles

89L would be a replacement receiver.

A friend told me that years ago there were quite a lot of un-numbered replacement receivers around. No doubt sold off in the 60s or 70s.

when a rifle was brought in FTR to CAL if it was too far gone they would re-assingn the SN on a new rifle .CAL rifles that were FTR'd were not marked as such but are easy to tell..if u have a WW2 dated receiver that is parked then it was FTR"d all war time receivers were blued

And I'll bet the reason receivers were junked was damage to the lips of the bolthead retaining groove.

That MkI* modification was a big mistake. I've sometimes wondered if it wasn't done to make sure that NA-made rifles would not be retained in British service post-war.

If anyone thinks they were above such games, read "Without Warning" on the games played to keep Canadian optics out of consideration for UK service.
