Speaking about milsurplus hell... Would it not be blasphemy to do heavy bluing on bolt and bayo on non-refurbed all matching 1958 letter series SKS that sits in its original laminated stock?
The only SKS I ever wanted is blackened bayo and bolt SKS, but I also wanted to have non-refurbed matching SKS with laminated stock. Of course such combination is not possible. I'm hesitating, I don't collect and don't appreciate SKSs (but let's face it, every Canadian should have at least one SKS), but I know lot of ppl out there do. Would you curse me for that?
Maybe I just need to sell this one and find some nice matching refurb with black bolt and bayo... Should I spare her or should she fall?

I haven't seen black bayo and bolt but they may be around, I have 2 55/56 refurbs with the black bayo and are by far the prettiest o the bunch whatever bluing process they used made them really nice and the bayo looks like one of corwin arms spec forces knives!
Your stock looks like it has seen dampness or water, maybe it is the pic?? I say go ahead and reblue,, make the rest worth more,, maybe, some day!! It would cost a lot to do that though or do you have a blung setup? Cheaper to buy another with good blued bayo and then just blue the bolt. I kinda like the bolt as is myself! Good luck, show pics when you are done!

Trade it to or sell it to a collector and then buy a refurbished unit with a blued bayonet if that's what you really want out of an SKS.

Your rifle would look just absolutely gorgeous if you deep blued the bayo and bolt. Your letter gun has a nice dark stock and the bluing on the rest of the parts looks great, with the receiver cover not stamped you'd have a nice flowing line of color. Black bayos and bolts are more commonly found on earlier refurb import guns as they saw the most wear and tear and there were certainly crates that had moisture invade. The crates I see from North Sylva it seems the earlier rifles are painted barrels with new bayos and some new parts like gas tube and piston. They have the older triggers though that are not being held back by retailers due to the RCMP inspection protocol. 'Newer' '56-'58 stamped and letter guns are blued nicely it seems but there is a chance that they are being held back because of the newer triggers. I saw a Izzy in Wholesale Sports the other day that was just gorgeous, but because it had that trigger, they couldn't sell it.

Is your mag pinned to 5? If it is, your rifle is a refurb.

What does pinning to 5 have to do with refurbishing? Of course it's pinned to 5, last time I looked outside of my window I saw Canadian flag :)

I noticed the guns you are looking for in your sig. I'm on the hunt for a nice SVT-40 for a good friend, I'll keep my eye open while I'm sorting crates!

I really think you should blue that bayo and bolt as I said earlier, it would look really sharp. I'm just messin' with you on the refurb crap, I just like to poke at topic tender spots and see what happens... I am a huge fan of the SKS, I hope we can chat about them more!

Mass production ended, yes. Then were small runs in 1956 - serials end with D (Д), 1957 - serials end with I (И), and in 1958 - serials end with K (К). So called "letter series" SKSs.

P.s. these are not rumors. Those facts had been well known to the collectors in Russia and Ukraine. Take a look here http://www.yooperj.com/SKS-22.htm

The thing I've learned after all my research and hands on various SKS is that anything is possible. Unless you have the papers to back it up or your grand pappy brought it on a boat, it's very difficult to know what's what. We only have so much info.
