Hi guys, just picked up this gently used and hunted with .308. Comes with 2 clips, and a Scope Chief IV-M 4 power . Serial number 1553**A ,Makes it a 1964 production. Barrel measures around 18 inches.Does that make it a Carbine? Has the basket weave stock ect , same as my 1968 model 100. Any one know what kind of value on this one. The fact that it is a 1964 is throwing me for a loop. Thanks for any advice or info .

thats about the last year they made them, still sell for $450 to $500 here in ontario, clips are $85 if you can find them. great gun!

The basket weave on the stock is a stamped pattern making it a "post 64". The earlier guns had checkered stocks.

During its production run from 1955 through 1973, there were roughly 284,000 (some list the number as 283,913) Model 88s made in .308, .243, .358 and .284. When introduced, the Model 88 was available only in .308. The next year--1956--two more chamberings were added: the .243 and the .358. And then in 1963 the .284 was introduced.

There is no checkering on the carbines. They had a plain walnut stock. Someone has made a carbine out of an 88 rifle. Still is a nice gun I bet.

Yes, that's right, I have a rifle, and one of the guys in camp has the carbine. Mine is quite a bit longer than his, and has the stamped basket weave, his has the carbine band, and a smooth stock.
Both are good shooters, and nice rifles.
