Curtton did an awesome job with his thesis on the Chinese SKS!

I have a really sweet rifle that appears correct for 1967 production except for questions regarding the Blade bayonet and stock.

By the serial number 11 2407xx, I am aware this should be a 1967 made Factory 26 SKS.

Completely matching with stamped numbers. ( except no #'s on the stock)
Blade bayonet and housing all looks correct
Milled receiver and trigger group, correct gas block etc...
Threaded barrel
Mag pinned with the cylinder type block. ( nicely done)

The biggest question is....
No markings on the stock at all, but the stock is correct for the blade bayonet, which was phasing out around this time or a bit before.

Perhaps the stock is a replacement? The rifle does not look rebuilt.

I am not sure when this rifle came in to Canada, but I have had it about 1 year.

Thanks for any feedback. Cheers Paul

Typical of carbines imported by Lever Arms in the early 00s. Most were factory 26/Sino-Soviets. All seemed heavily refurbed with those blond stocks and phoshated bolt carriers being typical as is the method of blocking the magazine and the side sling bale. Stocks were not renumbered. The wood is also less dense/lighter than those seen with non-refurbed military issue carbines.

The 1967 carbine can show a spike bayonet (late 67) or blade (early 67). There is debate about the exact date of transition - I don't think anyone knows for sure. Check the front ferrule where the bayonet blade rests. Is it a "V" (Blade) or a shallow notch (spike)?

its easy to figure out the date when the bayo was switched .

i look towards the US becos the large number of chinese sks imported before the banned in 1994 .

i have compiled all the listing of all the factory 26 with pic that showed the code and serial numbers for several months on gunbroker.com and my data shows the switch was done sometime in 1965 or serial number in the 9 million .

data:

1. sn in the 7 mill, had 3 listings , all were blade.

2. sn in the 8 mil had 13 listings, all but one were blade.

3. sn up to 9,068,600 had 3 listing , all were blade.

4, sn higher than 9,173,770 had 4 listing, all were spike .

5. sn in the 10 mill , had 14 listings , all were spike .

so the switch were done some where between 9,068,600 and 9,173,770 .

Thank you all for the info!

I am actually in touch with my buddy who was the original owner.
It was purchased Nov 2002 from P&D from a shipment that had just arrived.

The front ferrule is contoured to fit the blade in a V and is blued/phospahte everywhere...no mods to that area, nice fit.
The phosphate style of re-finish is accurate.

There is no indication at all that any parts were re-numbered.
Everything looks very well struck originally with some fading in the refinish areas that were not too deep originally such as the trigger guard. All numbers are matching and stamped. There are no signs of any previous numbers or blurred areas anywhere.
And as indicated there are no markings at all to what we all agree is obviously replaced wood.

All other attributes follow the correct guidleines for a '67 dated rifle based on Curtton's essay! (thanks again for that info by the way).

Looks like the most interesting attribute is the blade.
It looks completely at home and a perfect fit with all the components including the replacement stock.

Cheers Paul

Bumping this up as I made a parrallel thread before I found this one... http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=771320

Mine is a 10 million serial number Factory /26\, no serial number on the stock with a blade bayonet with the proper V shaped ferrule and stock for the blade. All other parts match.

First a look at the proper characteristics, as documented in Curtton's Type 56 Sticky in this part of the forum...

- “/26\ 10,22*,**8” (ie codes are on the far left side before the 3 Chinese characters as per 1962-1970 style)
- Short barrel lug = mid production- short barrel lug (part1965 - 1980).
- Early sight base.
- Stock sling swivel = bottom of stock, consistent with changes made in 1966 from the side to the bottom.
- Milled receiver, matches early and mid-production which 66 falls into.
- Lightening cut on bayonet lug and bolt consistent with 1966 production notes. This lightening ended in 1967.

The anomalies for a 1966 rifle…
- Blade bayonet = China SKS manufacturing changed to spike bayonet in mid-1965
- No serial number on the stock.
- While the stock appears to have the proper sling mount on the bottom rather than the side, the stock is properly cut to fit the blade bayonet. The bottom sling 66 style contradicts the blade bayonet cut on the stock. Stocks would have changed in mid1965 to coincide with the spike bayonets coming into use.

Adding the info here more for those that were in this thread. Happy if mine is a refurb.

Thanks for adding your info "fenceline"...they look like Twins eh?
On a seperate note...my rifle is really clean but the trigger pull is terrible! Very heavy! Cheers Paul
