My first generation Glock 9mm needs the barrel replaced (rifling gone), and could use a replacement cap on the recoil spring assembly.

The repair itself should be trivial but the couple of gunsmiths I've talked to locally (Halifax/Dartmouth area) aren't sure where to obtain parts and at least one doesn't have an import license if they had to come from the US.

Can anyone recommend a Canadian smith who is equipped to do the work or a Canadian Glock parts supplier?

Thanks

Are you sure the rifling is gone? Glocks have POLYGONAL rifling ,which is different and looks different to normal rifling. What type of loads are you shooting and is the accuracy bad enough to think the barrel is gone?

Not 100% sure by looking since as you say the polygonal rifling is "subdued" compared to regular rifling, but FMJ bullets are keyholing and all over the target even when the gun is sandbagged.

If they are hand loads, change the load , sometimes a little faster or a little slower if really fast, can stabilize the bullet. Sometimes only 1/2 gr might do it. If they are factory loads, try a different brand before you spring for a new barrel. Good luck.

How many rounds through it? Did you had shoot lead a lot? If so, a very good and deep cleaning to remove the exess of lead in the riflings can make those reapear.

The gun is new to me a couple of years ago so unfortunately it's hard to say how many rounds (at least the 800-1200 I put through it). No lead to speak of (maybe 50 rounds) and as things have gotten worse I've tried to keep it squeaky clean.

As an aside the OD of the bullet on the factory ammo I've been using lately (Sellier & Bellot TFMJ 115 gr) is several thou less (0.351-0.352") than my preferred reload component (Hornady 115 gr FMJ RN 0.355" OD).

The Sellier & Bellot is definitely giving me grief, the Hornady not so much.

Edited to say: BEARMAN you're probably right--I haven't been reloading for the 9mm in a while. I'll give that a stab before replacing the barrel :)

800 to 1200 is not a lot of rounds, the thing is, Glocks use polygonal rifling and you would not be able to see lands and grooves at all, Wikipedia has a great picture of both barrels side by side showing how subtle the rifling is in a Glock, search polygonal rifling there to see what i mean, even with a new barrel it's barely noticeable. normal land and groove rifling cuts grooves into the bullet, but Glocks actually squeeze the bullet into a 8 sided shape of sorts.

Regardless,if you want it replaced,I would not bother with a gunsmith, it would be cheaper to go to Stormlake who sells replacement match grade barrels(and they ship to Canada!), you'd save money, and have yourself a match grade barrel.

Try Questar they deal with Stormlake barrels direct

There's an idea

Edited to add: Sounds easy assuming the procedure is as Questar claims here:
http://www.questar.ca/deals/StormLake.htm
(except that shipping/insurance/customs fees are now US $60.19 :-( )

Guess we'll find out in a few weeks when either the postman or the RCMP knocks on the front door :) In the meantime I'll work up some loads for the old barrel to see how they compare with the new one.

Edited again to say: Thanks guys.

The process is not complicated, just go to the Stormlake website and place an order for the barrel you want, the process is no more complicated than ordering any other product off the internet, in 4-8 weeks you get a barrel in the mail. And as for paying a few hundred bucks, you'd pay the same amount with a replacement Glock factory barrel and the hour fee of a gunsmith.

I ordered a Stormlake replacement barrel for my Smith Wesson M&P, it's a 40cal to 9mm conversion barrel, and it comes in stainless instead of the usual black, I've already had a few people at the range ask me about it.

You have no reason to be worried about the cops coming to your door, your not doing anything illegal here, you can order a 50BMG sniper rifle from the USA if you have all the paperwork filled out, so you havenothing to worry about for a little barrel. Questar does all the import paperwork for you anyway, all you have to do is order and wait for it in the mail. Nothing more.

Thanks ajay. Ordered one this morning because of your advice but it's hard for me to leave paperwork to someone else. I'll get over it :)

Good job!! You won't regred it. Having a Stormlake barrel will improve accuracy quite a bit, and now that you don't have to deal with polygonal rifling anymore(since Stormlake is lands/grooves) you can use any bullet material you like, such as lead!!

Sis you get a regular length model or the extended ported barrel?

there really is just about no change its the glock barrle.
I have owned one glock 22 that i shot over 80k in and it was well used when i got it, id say 145K intotal and it still shot better them my minty inglis BHP.

While you are at check the rifleing at the crown and the crown.
Too much cleaning can wash out the rifling at the crown and give keyholing.

Roger that 10x, although I can safely say this gun never suffered from too much cleaning :-/

Barrel arrived this morning--6 weeks to the day after placing the order. Might be next week before I get a chance to test it.
