We hunted near Alexandria, Ont. this Wednesday. Hundreds of geese around, but 3 of the guns were out for the first time shooting. They also used 2s on 40 plus yard birds, to no effect! I used Federal Premium BBs and Tungsten BBs. I hit some way on the far side of the decoys. We had a number of wounded birds until I switched to 2nd and 3rd shot Tungsten. Scotch had a workout getting the wounded one, some in the next field.

Next on on the 13th.

Nice job boys, the photo's are very interesting, I have never seen geese in a field like that before? Is this typically where you guys would hunt them? In sask we hunt the grain fields I honestly had no Idea they would feed in a field like that. Also do you guys pattern your decoys to make a landing area, it doesn't look like it in the photo. You sure have a nice spread of decoy's I am envious. Nice dog too

:) I hunted fields also in Alberta, near Hanna. We put out around 300 decoys. With so many geese around, they won't get fooled by 100 or so! There is a hole some 25 yards in front of the blinds. The hole was to small oreginaly, and most of the geese landed 45 plus yards away. I hate using th coffins, as I find them somewhat dangerous with non rgular hunters from previous experience. I prefer to sit in the blind at the edge of a field with Scotch at my feet, peering at the geese flying and landing. I also hunt ducks on th side of a very large marsh. It keeps the feet dry!

With some good shots, we will fill our limit (5 each) within the first 3 flights! Also, using the proper ammo helps!

Best regards,
Henry:cool:

We hunt near you, in the Maxville area, and also over towards Crysler near the Nation River. We usually try to set up in cornfields that are being cut or have just been cut, but do not put out nearly that number of dekes.

How long does it take you to put out all those dekes? We put out about five dozen and set up the blind(s) in a half hour kind of thing. If we put out 300 dekes I reckon it would take us an hour...........

Most of us have been using high speed BBBs the last few years, with good results. I reckon #2 shot is for ducks these years with the steel.

Our guide rents farmland in the area and near Cornwall. I hunt the big marsh for ducks, West of Alexandria. This hunt was just South of the Nation River, North of North Lancaster. I use BBs at 1450 fps. I use 2s on ducks, pass shooting in the marsh. Late season, November, I use BBB and BB Tungsten. I will try the new Federal BlackCloud in BBB this Saturday. The BBBs were all that was available. The stuff is supposed to greatly increase the wound channel as it tumbles through the bird.

Check out this new website and the videos (funny!):

I will try some 2s on ducks, this Sunday.

Best regards,
Henry:cool:
OOPS: It takes 6 guys (including 2 guides) 45 minutes to set the decoys!

Thanks Henry! We have found that the BBBs tend to give either a clean hit or a clean miss, so we have less cripples. That having been said, I am going to give some BBs a try, because that was all the store had in high speed steel shot............

Doug

What choke did you use with the BBBs? I patterned the BBs. Mod in an Optima bore 391 gold gives a full choke pattern at 40 yards. IM, the pattern opens up. I use IC in September and the LM the rest of the season. Beretta/Benelli claim that using chokes tighter than Mod disrupts larger pellets of steel shot. My experience proves them right. Steel is not compresible, therefore the larger pellets must fight to get through tigher choke, producing flyers.

We have also hunted near Crysler during the past decade. The guide checks the fields every day after his regular hunt. He won't hunt the same field twice in a row. He is an excellent caller, also.

Here is a pic of the portable blind:

That is my neighbour with his ducktowler. The little runt does retreive the geese. This Saturday, he will have help from Scotch.

Best regards and have a great hunt,

Back to Henry, I am using a "Wad Wizard" choke tube, recommended by a CGN waterfowl guru - and I am very happy with it. The other guys are using Modified Chokes.

300 decoys  that's too much work. Around these parts a big spread (very effective) is 5-6 doz. and that's in a field holding 1-5K geese. I wish we could get away using those situp blinds but there's rarely even a tree in most of the fields around Winnipeg, let alone a hedge row. I do agree that a layout blind is no place for a dog, the muzzle blast is directed straight down on the dog, that's where a mutthut 20 yards behind the shooters is ideal.

:) The Blackcloud and the shooters were great. We had one that was somewhat nervous and scared off two flights. We only got some small flights, max 6 birds at a time. The blinds were set in the open between two alfalfa fields. Every bird hit with the BBBs Blackcloud fell dead, even way out there! I even had two bird that the guts were blown open (going away shots at some distance)! I had one wounded bird that I shot with my 4th shot, with the Winchester Extreme Range Non-Toxic B. It was finished off with a reload of Blackcloud. The other guns used Winchester Supreme BBs at 1550. Several were one shot kills.

Day 2s results

Nobody was shooting in the area. There were a ton a birds in the little corn fields that were just cut. Next week, we will start hunting the corn fields.

Summary:
Nice cold day (0C)
BBB Blackcloud is fantastic, even at $34/25
Not crazy about the Winchester Extreme Range non-toxic, I prefer the Federal BBs.

goose hunting

my buds and i hunt in the crysler area ,we have 4 farms to hunt on with lots of geese i now use bb from winchester im also a novice but avid goose hunter,i enjoy it a lot.

:)Thanks,
Friday I will be doing backup at La Roue. I should get to shoot at least 20 or so birds during the driven shoot. Unfortunately due to knee surgery, I won't get to clean up the main woods! Scotch should still do 15 to 20 retreives.

Next goose hunt is in two weeks. I will try to hunt the big marsh on Saturday.

Best regards,
Henry:cool:

I am just back from a four day goose hunt up that way. We hunted cut corn fields in the mornings and ponds at night. We WHALED the geese, except for one morning when everything was flying high and absolutely not committing to our location. I shot my first triple ever last night, and another triple this morning. I am a happy camper! :p

Most of us were shooting Winchester High Speed BBs, and I am very (VERY) happy with this ammo.

Doug

:) Some of the guys were using Winchester Premium at 1550 BBs. Pierre with the Win BB load, even KOed a goose that I wounded with the Win Extreme Range Non Toxic!

We are stocking up on the Blackcloud BBBs and Fed Tungsten BBs.

Best regards,
Henry:cool:
PS: All our geese are procesed by Himbault, South of Valleyfield into tourtiere (meat pies), sausage and terrines.
