So Gunnewb is thinking about his first hunting expedition. Something that wont require a ton of skill or prep(dressing and packing out a deer) but a chance to get out this weekend, look around, hang out with my brother, and maybe even get a hare for the pot.

I hear that I can do this with just a win card, correct? I dont have a hunting license currently.

Figured on ghost lake because I know the area(not well but better than anywhere else)

As long as I stay away from camping zones Im in the clear, right?

Also- can I shoot grouse as well with out a hunting license?

Yes, what angrysoldier said. Should be particularly good rabbit hunting where there are thick stands of evergreens.

I'm talking about a green & white jungle where you have a constant battle with falling snow down your neck and pine needles decorating your outer clothing.
A few steps, stop look listen, very often bending down, looking around trees, through a screen of brush, and getting down to thier range of vision heighth. Look for that single eye watching you and the unmistakeable curve of thier back. Once positively identified, quickly shoot before they get too nervous and scoot. Repeat the above. Try not to get turned around and lost while in the heat of a chase.

A nice mix with two hunters is a rifle in 22 LR and a shotgun with small shot and more open chokes. Chances are pretty good that in the thick forest, the shotgun totter will fill his game bag sooner than the rifleman.

Good luck and have fun!

Well,

Fun was had! And no rabbits were killed in the process....sadly. got out late around 1:00 till dark. Trapsed around some crummy spots- then ended up seeing a TON of tracks. Very interesting to see the places they like and the places they don't. (Clearings vs places with tons of underbrush in which to hide and green foliage under the snow)

Maybe I need to be quiter next time, or get out earlier.

Well, glad you got out for a nice walk friend.
If it's any comfort, my day was pretty much exactly the same.
Lots of sign, not a single bunny to be had, up here near Cold Lake!

Cheers.......
