1st of 2021 big male down

Nice big dog!

In early Nov I was hunting deer with a brother near Athabasca. We saw a coyote standing in the middle of a field along a gravel road and decided to stop and invite it into his man-cave. Now most coyotes run like heck when a vehicle stops, but this one stood frozen. My brother got out the other side to load up. The dog sat down like a seeing eye dog. Brother crossed the road and set up in the offside of the ditch while the dog sat 150 yds away watching the whole time. Pop...dog in truck. It was probably a year and a half old. We agreed, one unwary coyote removed from the gene pool...

That's a good one, nice work.

What scope do you have? It sounds like you'd benefit from something lower powered for the close shots.

Do larger furs get more money at auction? How much money might that one bring in?

I have a 4x12 multi X Bushnell Prime.... Next scope will most likely be a 3x9 even thinking of a 2x7 but most likely go with the 3x9 multi X....
As for fur prices..... Not sure, it`s been quite a while since I sent one to auction but I do remember getting a cheque for $1.08... ya, one dollar and 8 cents.... Maybe I didn`t do a good job or something so I have been hesitant to send any in ever since.....Funny thing was, at the time, I paid a license trapper $20 to flesh it (prepare it) for auction for me.... so to get $1.08 was disappointing.....

Thanks for posting, love reading about your outings.
Too much going on in life at the moment but in 5 to 10 year I hope to (semi?) retire and get into this style of coyote hunting.

Ouch, $1.08? I could see why you were discouraged from sending more in.

For this area it can be tricky choosing the right optic as we could be hunting wide open fields where a few hundred yard shot is possible, hardwoods where you may take a 100 yard shot, or in the thick stuff where 10 yards is the farthest you can shoot. Something like a 1-12x40mm with illuminated crosshairs would be ideal.

I switched to a 2-7x on my deer slug gun and it's great out to 200 yards and was a huge improvement over the 3-9x for close stuff.
