1st range session with 416 ruger

had the 416 ruger out today,it certainly does shoot.Nothing was worse than a 2" group, most ran right around 1".Seems to really like the speer 350gr bullets,78grs of RL15 hit 2560 over the chrony and all 3 would clover leaf.The 400gr hornady seem to hold around 1.5" with 75grs RL15 hitting 2350 fps.Recoil was less than expected,it total fired about 45rnds.would like to find some 300gr barnes X bullets to try.
 
Local store had 6 boxes of brass,still waiting on dies,so cut down a set of rigby dies I had,so I can neck size the 416 ruger and seat using the rigby seater die
 
I wasn't even aware that rifles in 416 Ruger had made landfall in Canada.

Good scores all 'round. I suspect Hornady will be the only die source for some time?
 
Sounds great. If I ever thought I needed more power than the .375 Ruger, I'd go for the .416 Ruger. Heck, i might buy one anyway.:p

I recall when tod bartell found a .375 Ruger for me, he found 3 boxes of factory ammo, but I used some .375 H&H dies to barely neck size,and some 300 RUM dies to seat the bullets.

When I was shooting my Rigby it very much liked those 350 gr Speers, and that was my go to bullet. I tried Barnes 350 and 400 gr Xs and solids, but the Magtip was the bullet I shot most often. It was interesting in those days, some boxes of Xs had a large nose cavity and others a small, I guess the folks at Barnes were still experimenting with what worked best. A 300 gr TSX should give you a nice flat trajectory with that rifle. Nice results on a first outing.
 
the recoil of the 416 ruger is actually not bad at all,not nearly as bad as the 458 win- 458 lott. It seems just slightly heavier than the 375 ruger,just a very big push. Will take it this weekend to look for a grizz.
 
Cool, have a blast. The local gun shop here has a .416 Alaskan on the shelf. That there is a big hole in the end of that barrel. Good luck on your grizz hunt.

That's what I love about the big bores, the boom instead of the bang. I find them far less snappy than the smaller caliber high intensity cartridges.

I loved my 45/70 loaded HOT, and have quite enjoyed a number of 375s, both H&H and Ruger, at the range.
