So some friends of mine took me duck hunting today. I only managed to shoot one teal, and that was walking them up, after I missed three easy shots from the blind . . . but it was a lot of fun! The guy I was with was pretty cool. He let me take the first shot at almost everything from the blind, and when I went walking with him and his brothers, they let me go first so I could get first crack at anything we spooked. I thought that was pretty classy.

So, you've learned, like the rest of us, that we need more practice with our shotty.

That's not such a bad thing.

Congrats and welcome to the club.

I did a lot of crow hunting last winter to practice, but I haven't gone out for crows in months now.

I shot skeet with about half a dozen other guys about a month ago and easily spanked them using my pump gun or my single shot. Clays were pretty easy compared to crows.

Ducks, however, seem to be a lot harder! :D

I was shooting #2's, steel, and all I've ever shot out of the pump gun before was #4 lead or #7 1/2 lead, and I think that made a difference. In fact, I know it did. But that's my fault for not practicing.

I was actually pretty bummed at shooting that teal. I jumped three teal and a black duck when I came up on them, and I had a good shot at the black duck first. Don't know how I missed him . . . but then I shot the teal, knocked him down across the creek and had to swim across for him. :)

Keep swinging once you are locked onto your bird Zed!
Patience, it'll come and before you know it, you will notice that you are still swinging after the bird is falling !:)
I LOVE shooting teal BTW, and yup, they are my favourite even above geese.
Also, learning how to lead a bird is a learned trait, but it is a fun trait to learn.....!

Like you I was taught duck hunting by a bunch of brothers, they had been doing it since they were kids, collectively around a 100 years or more. They acted the same, let me take the shots first and were just generally helpful and patient. One of them did end up running off with my wife though.

Would'nt change it for the world. :D

I just noticed that bit. There should be a club for guys that have swam for their own birds. I've had to leave my wet underpants on the river bank in November ( btw, due to retrieving ducks ;) ) It makes you train a dog pretty quick. :D
