Wow what a rush...

I have never been so close to deer before. ( will measure in the morning but was less then 20 yards. ) I drew my bow and froze. The deer looking right at me what seemed like forever. Then the hiss and gone.

Just had to share since the G/F couldn't care less about my stories.... But I never froze before with a riffle. this bow thing seems more personal.

Im hooked....

Extremely addicting. Best part of bowhunting, its so up close and personal.

Better to freeze and not shoot, than shoot and miss, or wound because you are so wound up.

Next time will be easier, you'll be more relaxed.

It's a rush, innit? :D

First, and so far only, deer I got with a bow, was a bit over 10 yards, I was on an upturned bucket behind a light screen of branches stuck in the ground in front of me.

Pretty sure the buck should have been able to hear my heartbeat, because it was thumpin' I gotta say!

It doesn't get old, hunting or just loafin' in the woods and being able to sit still enough for the deer to walk by and keep going undisturbed.

'Course, there was the coyote that was mindin' his own business, sniffing the bushes when I jumped up and holler "Boo" at him. Departed sorta like in a cartoon, but I never seen a cartoon dump ballast like that, eh. :D
Scared the crap outta him, literally! Funny!

Cheers
Trev

THIS^^^

Good on ya for not shooting. Welcome to the club! I have goose bumps all of a sudden! Damn I can't wait!

Yes, I remember the first time I was up in a tree stand and two small bucks walked directly under me. I was amazed that they didn't bust me. One of the main reasons I enjoy archery hunting!
Better not to shoot than to make a poor shot. Good luck with the rest of the season.

No worries. Bow hunting is a big rush and letting the arrow go often marks a filled tag and ends the season. Lots of fall left so keep at it. Using the bow is about hunting and not about filling tags.

BTW I haven't filled my tag either. LOL Best of luck

bowhunting is a passion and obsession. when that deer walks out inside of 20 yds, the adrenaline valve cranks to full and your heart thumps at what seems to 200 bpm. It is frustrating as you found out, I have personally had an issue my first year. I had a doe come in at 14yds, my right leg just started to shake and I couldn't stand, never did get a shot. Nothing beats hunting with a bow, bowhunter till I die.

Welcome to the fraternity Dilli! It is a lifelong passion... I have been bowhunting for 40 years and have taken a couple hundred big game animals of eight species (nine, if you count turkeys, which most do)... I love it as much today as I did 40 years ago when I took my first black bear and buck.

Here is a short story... I took a new bowhunter out for bear over bait... we were in a double treestand (built from jackpine poles)... the fella forgot his belt loop bow rest, so I told him to just rest the lower limb on my knee if one came in... shortly, a dandy 400 pound boar came huffing in... he was a boss bear and was making a racket, with bluff charges and woofs... the bow resting on my knee began vibrating, the shaking then bouncing up and down... when the boar turned sideways, the new fella drew back and anchored... he stood there for a couple minutes until the bear left... then he turned to me a said "did I get him?" I was sad to inform him that he had never released the arrow... and suggested that he lower the string!

I just picked up a bow this season, never hunted but have always wanted to get into archery, well now im thinking about trying my hand at bowhunting. that said ive never hunted before and have no idea where to start, or who to ask haha

that said, as i research and learn more i love coming across threads like this, makes me more and more excited to try it!

I'm jealous! I got my first deer my first season 2 years ago out of pure luck with a rifle. I didn't do any of the homework, was just put in spot. I don't count it a success.

Last year I went out, doing my own homework and legwork this time, with a SKS and saw lots of deer, but nothing in range. After that I bought myself a proper hunting rifle and am super excited for this season. I would love to try bowhunting but need a taste of success with the rifle first!

I hunt moose from the ground, I mean that I walk the forest with my bow and call with the cone. I had the honor to live the moment twice (2010 and 2012). To get within 15 yards of those animals and let go the arrow is really awesome. For me, the experience is 20X better than rifle hunting.
