2 3/4 in a 3'' ???

So for my dumb question of the day, Can I use a 2 3/4'' shot shell in my Remi 1100 marked 3'' Mag? Thanks

fire away. It's perfectly safe. I have a 3.5" mag barrel and I fire 2.75" shells all the time it won't damage the chamber.

Its not a dumb question! It is a very reasonable safety question.

Always safe to go smaller, just never go bigger

Works fine in mine. From what I understand it may not cycle as well, but I've never had any troubles yet.

If your shotgun says 3' magnum, this means 3' is the largest length of shotshell you may use, but you may use shorter....23/4 is by far the most common size of 12 gauge shell....

I have the same shotgun and although the 2 3/4 works all right it doesn't always eject with #7 1/2 field loads. But it's definately safe to use.

They pushed the interchangeable shells thing pretty hard when I took my PAL. Is this still the case, anyone who took the course should know. I could be mistaken though.

YUP
I did my PAL in January, they pushed the whole smaller is safe, and 2 3/4 shells will fit in a 3 inch so make sure you have the right one

You are fine. As stated by lone-wolf, you might have cycling problems due to the smaller gas pressure. I've never heard of it happening with 2 3/4 shells in a 3" chamber (I've heard about cycling problems in a 3.5" chamber, , but not a 3")

Wrong, 2 3/4" will fit in 3", but 3"wont fit in a gun marked 2 3/4"
Dont make that mistake.My brother did it with an Ithica, he was lucky , he only jammed the shell in the chamber(melted a bit)was a real pain to remove.In a weaker chamber, it could blow up in your face.

3 inch WILL FIT in 2 3/4 chamber. That it why it is dangerous. If you fire a 3 inch in a 2 3/4 chamber, the shell will open into the forcing cone, overpressure will result. If you are very lucky, you might even still be able to count to 10 on your fingers, and see with both eyes, but if those are things you enjoy, you'd be wise to never do it. The 3 inch size refers to the length of the fired shell, they are actually 2 3/4 in length when unfired, which is what leads people to make mistakes of this nature if they are not paying attention. Be careful. This is most definitely not a stupid question to ask.

Good question. If it's an older 1100, then the only problem could be cycling with 2 3/4" shells that are not magnums.In the early '70's ,remington made two 1100's, a standard for 2 3/4 " shells, and a magnum for 2 /34" and 3" magnum shells. The standard has two gas ports on the barrel ring and the magnum has one gas port, hence the cycling problem with lighter 2 3/4" loads. You are perfectly safe shooting 2 3/4" loads in a magnum chambered shotgun.

At the PAL course, they also pushed the fact that 16ga(i think) shells will get stuck up the barrel enough for a normal 12ga shell to fit behind it and fire, causing a very bad day. So yeah, also make sure you check the shell themselves!
