2.75 or 3" sabot slugs? Which to buy?

Just found that $20 off on a $40 purchase (with an Options MC) coupon for Canadian Tire. Though I don't have a slug gun yet, I plan to, so I thought I would pick some up sabot slugs since they'll be pretty much half price.

Would you guys suggest buying 2.75" or 3" slugs? Will most likely be for deer. I have heard 3" slugs are pretty brutal recoil wise.

Is there a big difference in effective range, and killing power between the 2.75" and 3" sabot slugs?

Thanks

It all depends on the type of slug you are referring to...

Some of the premium loads like Remington Copper Solid or Winchester Supreme Partition Gold are already pushing 1900 FPS with a 2.75" and the 3" is a little faster (2100 IIRC).

Out group has hunted the Controlled hunt with both mentioned above for several years now with tremendous success... so much that we have even thought about using the slug guns in the following weeks rifle season.

In short, we are all impressed and do not see the need to go to the 3" slug. Plus, recoil is heavy as it is with the 2.75" already!

My advice would be to try both and go ahead with whatever shoots tightest in the gun you are going to be using.

Good luck!

Basically the same question as 'Magnum vs. Standard'.

If you really think you're going to be taking long shots with that slug gun, then try the 3". Otherwise, the 2 3/4" will do the job with less noise and recoil.

What kind of effective range would I be looking at for 2.75" and 3" 12 gauge slugs for a large deer? What would be the difference in range?

I shot 2 bucks this week with 3 inch shells. I could shoot a cannon and i wouldnt feel the recoil shooting at a deer.

I took 10 shots out of my gun last weekend, I felt it everytime then, the shoulder was pretty sore that night lol

I've had this same experience - I didn't feel a thing when I hammerd a big buck this week with a 3" Remington Copper Solid.

If you don't have a rifled barrel shotgun yet, buy a variety of sabot slugs to determine what it likes to shoot. Then standardize with the best performer and then go shoot some deer!!! :D
