2 in 1 question, GPS and Knife for a new hunter

Garmin is the most user friendly of the handheld GPS the color venture hcx should be more then you will ever need . I bought a SOG hunting knife / saw it was under $30 and is SOG's version of the sling blade.

You can't beat the Garmin 60 series for the money! There is a 62 series now, so they can me had for a great deal.

This one used to be $500 at most places. $230 is awesome!

This is all the GPS you will ever need and then some.

I agree that the Garmins are great machines. I purchased the Oregon 450T this year (a little pricey but it was on sale at Sail) as a replacement for an older model. The thing is so much fun and has so much detail it almost become an obsession playing with it. If you get any Garmin, make sure it has the Canadian topo in it - most of the ones off the net have only the US topo and the world map which does not show much detail for Canada. Just for interest, I also bought the Ontario 1-10,000 topo and downloaded parts of it into the GPS which provides even more detail, although as far as I know, these extra detail maps are only available at present for Ontario and Quebec.

2x with my 400t purchased in 2010.

Lots of stuff to look into. I ordered a Mora Knife on ebay, that saved some coin! I unfortunately missed a couple great deals on gps's on the EE! I really appreciate the feedback around them. Their are so many models it is hard to know where to start. I hope I can pick up a second hand one as electronics lose value so much faster than guns and I don't need the latest and greatest.

Final update:

I got a Garmin 76c used on the EE for 150 bucks to my door. It seems great and I look forward to testing it in the field.

I bought a Silva Ranger Compass (for too much money at Bass Pro.)

Mora knife for 14.00 on ebay:

I also got some nice boots, gloves, warm clothes, a warm coat, an 870, some emergency gear and most importantly, a guy who knows what he is doing to take me out for the first time this weekend!

Thanks for the tips!

That guy to take you out who knows what he's doing will be worth more than all the rest combined! I need one of those guys :p

That being said, good choice on the GPS. I use a garmin 60 at work and I liked it so much I bought one of my own! I've never seen a more expensive GPS that had any features I actually need.

There has been some mention of the downloaded maps people use... I don't think my new GPS has much installed on it, and my work one was always done by the tech people with everything I needed :p

When I bought the GPS, I saw the canadian topographical cd next to it for sale, for somewhere between $100 and $150. When I saw the price I threw up in my mouth a little bit. What maps are good to have besides that one? Someone mentioned backroad maps and province specific topo's. Are there any others? What do they cost and is there any way around paying full price?

I just got my first GPS. It's for the veh. A Garmin 1450 LTM. Check out prices of GPS Central. As for knives check in the knife forum, this question is often asked. I bought a pile of Moras when I was a scout leader, they work well. Peavey Mart here in Ab has them for about $10. I found a second hand store with a couple of the old red wood handle Moras for $5 each. Like new :) Good luck.

Have yet to get into a GPS so can't help you there but from 30 years of deer hunting I would recommend a knife with a blade just longer than when your thumb is extended down it from the handle this way you can protect your other hand from getting cut.I have seen a couple of guys do some nasty things to their hands.
I carry a folding saw to do the rib cage just a garden style sold at most hardware stores.
