The 8 amps at a nominal 120 VAC is about 1000 watts. The real issue is the inrush current when the motor is starting which could be as much 50-60 amps although only for less than 0.5 seconds. You need an inverter which will handle starting the motor. There are also different kinds of inverters. One which uses switching technology the other uses a large transformer. The switching type will weigh only 10-15#. The transformer type will be 40-50#. The transformer type is better at handling the inrush current surge. I believe Magnum Energy makes a 2400 watt unit which should do the job. These are industrial grade but you will get what you pay for. They are available from DC Power in Calgary. (just Google it) You can get cheaper ones at Canadian Tire or Princess Auto but??
Re targets, contact Tom Ferguson in Calgary, 1-800-361-1023. I believe he delivers to Grande Prairie and Bonneyville so depending on where in Northern Alberta you are, you might arrange to pick up there.
